ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India launches advanced automotive steel line in Hazira
The new Hazira line enhances AMNS India’s capacity to produce advanced automotive-grade steel, supporting evolving mobility demands.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS India) has inaugurated a new Pickling Line and Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM) at its Hazira facility in Gujarat. The new unit, opened on April 30, adds 2 million tonnes per annum to the company's automotive steel production capacity. This expansion aims to boost domestic manufacturing of high-grade automotive steel and reduce dependence on imports.
Key Highlights
- AMNS India opens new steel line at Hazira with 2 million tonnes annual capacity
- The facility produces high-strength steel for automotive use up to 1180 MPa strength.
- Expansion supports Make in India and reduces reliance on imported automotive steel.
- India's flat automotive steel demand is 7.8 million tonnes and growing at 6–7 percent annually.
Facility Capabilities and Output
The PLTCM will produce cold-rolled base steel for automotive applications. This includes Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), galvanized (GI), galvannealed (GA), and press-hardened steel (PHS). The facility is equipped to manufacture steel with strength levels up to 1180 MPa. These specifications meet the safety and lightweighting requirements under Bharat NCAP norms.
The new line supports the company’s Rs 60,000-crore expansion program at Hazira. This program covers both upstream and downstream capacity additions. The commissioning of the PLTCM is a key part of this broader investment plan.
Industry Impact and Strategic Goals
Dilip Oommen, CEO of AMNS India, stated that the new line enhances the company's ability to supply automotive-grade steel locally. He emphasized that this will strengthen supply chain resilience and help meet vehicle safety requirements in India.
Keiichi Ono, who inaugurated the facility, highlighted the collaboration between Japan and India in manufacturing and technology. He noted that the project supports the “Make in India” initiative by increasing domestic production capabilities.
India’s current demand for flat automotive steel stands at 7.8 million tonnes per annum. This demand is expected to grow at a rate of 6–7% annually. The growth is driven by rising vehicle production and increased demand for higher-grade materials.
Broader Industry Trends
The automotive sector in India is seeing a shift toward advanced materials and electrification. Companies are increasing their focus on controllers, sensors, and integrated solutions. Nearly 70% of some suppliers' order books are now linked to electrification. Domestic demand for motion technology remains stable, while export orders are also strong. However, fuel-related input costs continue to impact the sector.

CarBike 360 Says
With this new automotive steel line at Hazira, AMNS India reinforces its commitment to innovation and localization in the Indian auto sector. The move not only strengthens domestic manufacturing capabilities but also aligns with the growing demand for lighter, safer, and more efficient vehicles. As automakers evolve, such investments will play a crucial role in shaping India’s mobility future.
