Bajaj Auto is developing a new twin-cylinder engine for KTM's sub-500cc range in India, with global debut of the KTM 490 Duke and 490 Adventure expected by late 2027. Production will occur at Bajaj's Chakan facility.

Bajaj Auto is developing a new twin-cylinder engine in India for KTM's upcoming sub-500cc motorcycle range. Production will take place at Bajaj's Chakan factory in Pune. The new platform, created in partnership with KTM, is expected to debut globally by late 2027.
Key Highlights
- Bajaj developing new twin-cylinder engine for KTM in India
- KTM 490 Duke and 490 Adventure to debut globally by late 2027
- Engine output will comply with Europe's A2 licence under 48bhp
- Production set for Bajaj's Chakan plant in Pune
New Sub-500cc Platform Details
The new engine platform will likely carry the 490 moniker and will include the KTM 490 Duke and 490 Adventure models. The global debut is planned for EICMA 2027, with a market launch scheduled a few months after the event. This marks the third generation of KTM’s small-capacity engine platform, developed entirely by Bajaj in India.
The twin-cylinder engine will comply with Europe’s A2 licence regulations, limiting power output to under 48bhp (35kW). Manufacturing will be handled at Bajaj's Chakan plant, highlighting Bajaj’s increasing role in KTM’s international product strategy.
Model Lineup and Market Strategy
The 490 Duke will be the first model to launch on this new platform, followed by the 490 Adventure. There is also a possibility of future models such as the RC 490 and Husqvarna 501, depending on market demand.
The new 490 range is expected to replace the current 390 lineup globally. Selling two engine sizes with similar output in the same segment is not considered practical. However, KTM may continue to offer the 350cc-powered 390 range in India as a more affordable option. The upcoming 490 models will be positioned as premium, refined, and performance-focused upgrades for existing 390 owners.
Once launched, the KTM 490 range will compete with other motorcycles in the sub-500cc segment worldwide.
