Bhopal commuters are facing long queues and extended wait times at the city’s limited CNG refueling stations. The shortage has disrupted daily routines for thousands of drivers who rely on compressed natural gas vehicles. The city has only 16 CNG stations, compared to 191 petrol and diesel outlets. This imbalance has led to widespread complaints from vehicle owners who switched to CNG for cost savings and lower emissions.
Key Highlights
- Bhopal has only 16 CNG stations compared to 191 petrol and diesel outlets
- Commuters report wait times of up to two hours at CNG stations
- Demand for CNG has tripled in the last three years but supply has not kept pace
- Plans are underway to add 15 new CNG stations by year-end.
- Persistent shortages could push users back to gasoline and diesel vehicles
CNG Shortage and Commuter Impact
Many drivers report waiting up to two hours at CNG stations. Some even return home with half-empty tanks. Om Prakash, a cab driver from TT Nagar, said the situation is unreliable for work, especially during peak hours. Auto-rickshaw unions and other drivers have echoed similar grievances. They point to a lack of infrastructure as a major obstacle to the city’s push for greener transport.
The Madhya Pradesh Petrol Pump Dealers Association has identified the root cause as insufficient CNG stations to meet rising demand. The association stated that demand for CNG has tripled in the last three years, but supply has not kept pace. They are urging the government and oil companies to expedite the setup of new CNG stations.
Supply Constraints and Planned Expansion
City officials have acknowledged the strain on supply. A senior executive from a major gas distributor, speaking anonymously, revealed that there are plans to add 15 more CNG stations by the end of the year. These plans are pending land approvals and regulatory clearances.
India depends significantly on fuel imports to maintain a steady supply of compressed natural gas across states and union territories. The ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues to affect global crude supply, further complicating the situation for CNG users in Bhopal.
Environmental Concerns and Future Outlook
Environmental activists highlight that CNG plays a key role in reducing air pollution. Bhopal’s air quality index often exceeds 150, making cleaner fuels important. However, activists warn that persistent shortages could discourage CNG adoption and push users back to petrol and diesel vehicles.
The Petrol Pump Dealers Association noted that petrol infrastructure developed over decades, while CNG is relatively new. Delays in CNG deliveries, sometimes by three to four hours, cause overcrowding at stations. The association emphasized the urgent need to build more CNG stations to address the crisis.
As Bhopal pursues sustainable mobility under the state’s green agenda, the current CNG shortage highlights a critical infrastructure gap. Without prompt action, the situation could escalate, affecting thousands of vehicle owners and the city’s environmental goals.
