The upcoming facelift of the BMW X1, built on the UKL2 modular platform, has been seen testing internationally. This update marks the third generation of the crossover and will differ significantly from its electric counterpart, the iX1. While both models will share the X1 nameplate, their platforms and design approaches will diverge.
Key Highlights
- BMW X1 facelift uses UKL2 modular platform for ICE version
- Facelifted X1 adopts Neue Klasse design cues and new headlight design
- iX1 electric model will use a completely new platform
- Production of the updated BMW X1 expected to start in 2027
Platform and Design Differences
The internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the BMW X1 will continue to use the UKL2 modular platform. This platform supports a front-biased drivetrain and accommodates various powertrains, including pure petrol and hybrid options. In contrast, the iX1 electric model will be built on a completely new platform, aligning with BMW's shift toward electrification.
The facelifted X1 will adopt design elements from BMW's Neue Klasse design language. Externally, the test vehicle features a new headlight design, blacked-out alloy wheels, and blue brake callipers. These changes suggest a refreshed appearance, although the heavy camouflage makes it difficult to confirm all visual updates at this stage.
Interior and Mechanical Updates

Inside, the updated X1 is expected to incorporate functional elements from the Neue Klasse design language. Anticipated features include a new cabin theme and a pillar-to-pillar display strip, enhancing the vehicle's modern appeal. However, detailed information about mechanical changes remains limited as the vehicle is still in the testing phase.
The extensive camouflage on the test vehicle indicates that BMW is still finalizing the design and features. Production of the facelifted BMW X1 is projected to begin in 2027, signaling a continued evolution of the model in both ICE and electric forms.
