In a surprising turn of events, Ford, despite its phased withdrawal from India in 2021, is hinting at a potential comeback. The American automaker, which had been winding up operations and even considered selling its Chennai plant to the JSW group, recently cancelled the deal, opening the door to speculation about its future plans in the Indian market.
Amidst this uncertainty, Ford has filed a design patent in India, notably for the new generation Ford Endeavour, also known as the Ford Everest in international markets. The SUV made its global debut in 2022, featuring a rugged exterior, a longer wheelbase, and an array of modern features, including a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster.
Possibility of Swift Return:
With the patent filing for the Endeavour's design and the sudden shift in the decision to sell the Chennai plant, industry insiders suggest that Ford might be gearing up for a faster return to the Indian market than initially anticipated. The company, which had previously announced its phased withdrawal from India, is now exploring alternatives for its manufacturing facility, fueling speculation about a potential re-entry.
Sources indicate that Ford is actively considering various options, including utilizing the Chennai plant for exports or reintroducing the Endeavour in the Indian market. There are discussions about starting with Completely Built-Up (CBU) models and eventually moving towards assembling Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits locally. This strategic move is seen as a response to compete with segment leaders like the Toyota Fortuner.
New Endeavour: Features and Powertrain
The new-generation Ford Endeavour boasts of a redesigned exterior with a new grille design, larger headlights, and a 50 mm longer wheelbase compared to its predecessor. The interior is equipped with a modern dashboard featuring a portrait 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster.
Noteworthy features include wireless device charging, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, heated and ventilated front seats, a remote start function, gesture-controlled powered tailgate, and a 360-degree camera system.
Internationally, the Endeavour offers multiple diesel and petrol engine options, including 2.0-litre 4-cylinder diesel motors, a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel, and a 2.3-litre turbo-petrol.
Chennai Plant and Production Plans:
Ford's decision to cancel the sale of its Chennai plant to the JSW group has further fueled speculation about the company's manufacturing plans. The Chennai plant, which had been part of the phased withdrawal plan, might now play a crucial role in Ford's potential resurgence in India. The plant had been producing the previous Endeavour, and insiders suggest that retooling for the new model could be relatively easier.
Industry reports suggest that Ford is considering both local assembly and direct import options for the Endeavour. While the plan is to assemble the SUV at the Chennai plant, importing a limited number of fully-built units is also under consideration. The latter is seen as a way to enter the market sooner while the assembly line readies for full-scale production, possibly by 2025.
