Ford reconsiders Chennai plant sale, hints at comeback.
Talks with potential buyers stall; exploring export or re-entry.
Maraimalai Nagar's location attracts interest from Ola Electric, Hyundai, Tata Motors, MG Motor.
Ownership complexities persist; closure cost Rs. 1296 crores in severance.
The Chennai unit had 2,00,000 vehicles and 3,40,000 engine annual capacity.
Ford India is currently reconsidering its decision to sell the Chennai plant, leading to speculation about a potential comeback in the Indian market. The recent cancellation of a deal with the JSW group has triggered the discussions about the future of Ford's manufacturing facility in Maraimalai Nagar.
Sources reveal that Ford is actively exploring for alternatives for the Chennai unit, considering options such as utilizing the facility for exports or re-entering the Indian market. Talks with the potential buyers, including the JSW group, Mahindra, and Vietnamese electric vehicle maker Vinfast but the deal was not materialized, prompting the American automaker to reassess its plans.
Maraimalai Nagar's strategic location, close to Chennai and Ennore ports, and its easy access to Bengaluru, make it an attractive investment destination. Companies like Ola Electric, Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, and MG Motor have been in discussions with Ford India's management over the past two years.
The ownership of the land in Maraimalai Nagar currently remains with Ford India, adding complexity to the ongoing discussions about the future of the plant. The uncertainty surrounding the fate of the Chennai unit has also left the industry watchers eagerly awaiting for Ford's next move.
Interestingly, the closure of the Maraimalai Nagar factory reportedly cost Ford’s India approximately Rs. 1296 crores in the form of a severance package for 2592 workers. The negotiated severance deal ranged from Rs. 34.5 lakhs to a maximum of Rs. 86.5 lakhs per employee.
Suresh S, the president of the former employees’ Union of Ford India, stated, “All the employees have opted for a severance package. We have not heard anything about the current development of a comeback from our sources.” The Chennai unit, spanning 350 acres, had an annual production capacity of around 2,00,000 vehicles and 3,40,000 engines.
The uncertainty surrounding the Maraimalai Nagar plant began on 9th September 2021, when Ford announced its phased withdrawal from India. Now, with the possibility of a comeback on the horizon, industry watchers eagerly await Ford’s next move and the potential impact it may have on the Indian automotive landscape.
