Here's Why Automatics Are Becoming Standard across Lower Variants
Indian carmakers are introducing more affordable automatic variants, with the Kia Sonet now offering the lowest-priced diesel automatic crossover, reflecting a shift in consumer demand for convenience and ease of driving.

India’s mass-market car segment is experiencing a shift in buyer preferences. More customers now choose automatic transmissions over manual gearboxes. Urban traffic congestion and the need for convenient daily commuting drive this trend. Carmakers have responded by offering automatic options in lower and more affordable variants, not just in top trims.
Key Highlights

- More customers now choose automatic transmissions over manual gearboxes.
- Urban traffic congestion and the need for convenient daily commuting drive this trend.
- Carmakers have responded by offering automatic options in lower and more affordable variants, not just in top trims.
Affordable Automatic Options Expand
The Kia Sonet is a recent example of this shift. Kia now offers a torque converter automatic (diesel) and a turbo-petrol dual-clutch automatic in lower trims of the Sonet. These variants are priced below Rs. 10 lakh. This makes the Sonet the most affordable diesel automatic crossover currently available in India.
Other manufacturers have adopted similar strategies. Hyundai introduced a more affordable diesel automatic variant in the Venue. This new variant is positioned lower in the lineup, making automatic transmissions accessible to a wider range of buyers. Mahindra also launched the Z4 automatic variant in the Scorpio N. This move bridges the gap between entry-level and top-spec variants, offering more choices to customers.
Market Trends and Manufacturer Strategies
Most carmakers are expanding their automatic variant lineups. This approach helps them cater to a growing group of buyers who value ease of driving over small price differences. As traffic conditions worsen in major Indian cities, the demand for automatic transmissions is expected to rise further.
The push to make automatic transmissions available in lower-priced variants is likely to continue. Manufacturers aim to meet changing customer needs and maintain competitiveness in the market. This trend reflects a broader shift in consumer priorities toward convenience and comfort in daily driving.
