  • The premium motorcycle segment in India grew 18 percent year-on-year in the last financial year.
  • Company expanded premium portfolio with Xtreme 250R, Xpulse 210, Karizma XMR and Harley-Davidson X440.
  • Hero MotoCorp increased its EBITDA margin to 14.7 percent due to premiumisation and operational efficiencies.

Premium Segment Drives Growth

In its latest annual report, Hero MotoCorp highlighted that premiumisation continues to reshape the Indian motorcycle market. The premium motorcycle segment grew 18% year-on-year in the last financial year, outpacing the overall industry. Rising incomes and a preference for feature-rich products have shifted consumer demand towards higher-displacement motorcycles and scooters since the pandemic.

The sub-350cc segment has become a key area for growth. Changes in the GST structure have lowered the entry barrier for first-time premium buyers and encouraged existing customers to upgrade. In contrast, motorcycles above 350cc have experienced slower growth due to higher tax rates, although manufacturers have absorbed much of the additional cost to keep prices stable.

New Models and Expanded Portfolio

Hero MotoCorp plans to introduce new motorcycles under both its own and the Harley-Davidson brands by the financial year 2027. This move aims to further strengthen its presence in the 150-350cc segment. The company has already expanded its premium lineup with models such as the Xtreme 250R, Xpulse 210, and Karizma XMR. The Harley-Davidson X440 has also gained traction during the year.

The shift towards premium motorcycles has contributed to improved profitability. Hero MotoCorp’s EBITDA margin rose to 14.7% during the year, supported by a favourable product mix, premiumisation, cost optimisation, and operational efficiencies.

International Expansion and R&D

Hero MotoCorp is also focusing on overseas growth. Its expansion into the UK and the EU is anchored by a Euro 5+ compliant premium motorcycle portfolio. The company entered Italy, Spain, and France with models such as the Hunk 440, Xpulse 200 4V, and Xpulse Pro, positioning premium motorcycles at the centre of its international strategy.

The Hero Tech Center in Munich, Germany, plays a key role in developing advanced powertrains and technologies for premium products. Along with the Centre for Innovation and Technology in Jaipur, this facility supports the company’s global research and development efforts.

Retail Network and Future Outlook

Hero MotoCorp is investing in a differentiated retail experience for premium customers. During the year, it added 50 Hero Premia outlets, bringing the total to 130 stores across 115 cities. The company also upgraded 490 dealerships to the Hero 2.0 format, a technology-enabled retail concept aimed at improving customer experience and expanding premium reach in urban markets. Hero MotoCorp expects continued momentum in the sub-350cc category and sees this segment as a key growth opportunity for its premium motorcycle business in the coming years.
