The X440 introduces a new and impressive air- and oil-cooled 440cc engine, which not only boasts a substantial size but also fits seamlessly within the bike's frame. This review will focus on the engine and performance aspects of the X440, highlighting its power, torque, acceleration, revving capabilities, and overall riding experience.
Power and Torque
With a peak power output of 27hp, the X440 delivers a commendable performance. However, it is the torque that truly steals the spotlight, offering a whopping 38Nm that reaches its peak at a mere 4,000rpm. This torque figure surpasses that of any existing Indian single-cylinder motorcycle.
Remarkably, approximately 90 per cent of the torque is available from as low as 2,000rpm, resulting in effortlessly smooth acceleration within the 2,000-4,500rpm range. This superior torque easily outperforms the competition among the 350cc air-cooled motorcycles. While the engine revs comfortably up to just over 6,000rpm, some vibrations can be felt at higher revs, although they remain well-controlled.
Tractability and Gearbox
The X440 exhibits excellent tractability at low speeds, allowing for a clean pull in 3rd gear even from as low as 20kph. Although the bottom-end torque may not match the refinement of the Classic 350, it surpasses other rivals such as the Honda CB350, which often require frequent gearshifts.
Setting it apart from its air-cooled counterparts, the X440 comes equipped with a 6-speed gearbox, delivering smooth and precise shifts. Additionally, the inclusion of a reasonably light slip/assist type clutch enhances the overall riding experience. Furthermore, the throttle response is finely tuned, making the X440 a potentially enjoyable city commuter.
Cruising Capability
The X440 impresses with its enhanced cruising capability, surpassing the performance of 350cc motorcycles. It effortlessly maintains a smooth and steady 100kph cruise. Even pushing further to a steady 120kph reveals no signs of stress from the engine.
However, at this higher speed, mild vibrations can be felt in the seat, handlebars, and footpegs. During testing, the X440 achieved a top speed of 139kph on the speedometer, while a lighter rider reached an impressive 146kph on Hero's CIT test track.
Character and Sound
Beyond its exhilarating performance, the X440 stands out for its distinct engine character. The engine delivers a satisfying thump and beats at lower speeds, creating an enjoyable riding experience. While it may lack the gentleness and slow-revving nature of the RE 350 engine, the X440 embraces a playful demeanour that complements the bike's overall chassis behaviour.
Moreover, Hero has taken great care to ensure the X440 sounds impressive, considering its single-cylinder nature. The bike emits a pleasant and deep exhaust note that surpasses the Royal Enfield's sound, without feeling artificially synthesized like the Honda motorcycles.
