Mahindra & Mahindra Patent Portfolio Grows 20-Fold in Decade

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has expanded its granted patents from 56 in FY16 to 1,334 in FY26, showing a major increase in research and development. The company announced on April 23, 2026, that its patent portfolio has grown more than 20 times over the past decade. This marks a significant milestone in M&M's innovation efforts.

Patent Growth and Application Data

According to a press release filed with the National Stock Exchange and BSE Limited, M&M's cumulative granted patents rose from 56 in FY16 to 1,334 in FY26. The total number of cumulative patent applications reached 2,728 as of March 2026. The conversion rate of patent applications, which measures the proportion of applications granted, improved from 8% in FY16 to over 65% for applications filed over the last decade.

Of the 1,334 granted patents, 60% are linked to M&M's Automotive Business. The remaining 40% relate to the Farm Business. The patent portfolio also includes filings by Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd, a subsidiary focused on electric vehicles.

Recognition and Industry Impact

M&M attributed its patent growth to expanded R&D capabilities and alignment with India's 'Make in India' initiative. Over the past year, the company received several industry recognitions. These include the CII IP Award for Best Patent Portfolio, the CII Innovation Award as one of India's Top 50 Innovative Companies 2025, and the Questel IP Excellence Award.

Founded in 1945, Mahindra Group employs about 324,000 people across more than 100 countries. The group holds leadership positions in farm equipment, utility vehicles, and financial services in India. The company's patent achievements underscore its ongoing commitment to innovation and industry leadership.
