Mahindra Plans CNG Variant for XUV 3XO to Expand Powertrain Options
Mahindra is developing a CNG variant for the XUV 3XO to expand its powertrain options and address emission norms. The model will likely use a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol MPFI engine and is expected to launch by late 2026 or early 2027.

Mahindra is preparing to introduce a CNG variant for the XUV 3XO, aiming to broaden its powertrain lineup. This move targets the rising demand for CNG vehicles in India and aligns with stricter emission regulations. The CNG option would join the current petrol, diesel, and electric versions, making the XUV 3XO one of the few compact SUVs with such diverse choices.
Key Highlights
- Mahindra plans to add a CNG variant to the XUV 3XO lineup
- The CNG model will likely use a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol MPFI engine with 111hp
- CNG option aims to help Mahindra meet stricter emission norms
- Boot space challenges may require new cylinder packaging solutions
- Expected launch is late 2026 or early 2027 with no official confirmation yet
New CNG Variant Details
Industry sources suggest Mahindra will equip the CNG variant with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. This engine uses multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) and produces 111hp in its standard form. The MPFI system is more compatible with CNG integration than the direct injection (DI) unit. Mahindra has not yet released final performance figures for the CNG model.
The addition of a CNG variant would allow Mahindra to compete more directly with rivals like the Tata Nexon. The Nexon has led compact SUV segment sales for the last two financial years. In 2025, Mahindra sold just over one lakh units of the XUV 3XO, while the Nexon crossed the two-lakh mark. This highlights the competitive gap Mahindra aims to address.
Emissions and Market Strategy
Introducing a CNG model supports Mahindra’s strategy to reduce overall fleet emissions. With stricter Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms approaching, CNG vehicles can help offset emissions from Mahindra’s larger diesel SUVs. These diesel models still make up a significant portion of the company’s sales.
One challenge for the XUV 3XO CNG is boot space. The current model offers 295 litres of luggage capacity. Installing a conventional CNG cylinder could further reduce practicality. Mahindra may consider solutions like a dual-cylinder setup, as seen on the Nexon, or an underfloor tank to preserve luggage space.
Market Position and Launch Timeline
The CNG variant could help Mahindra strengthen its presence in regions with high CNG adoption. These include states such as Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, as well as metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai. The XUV 3XO CNG is expected to launch by late 2026 or early 2027. Mahindra has not yet issued an official confirmation regarding the launch timeline.
