Performance and Driving Experience

The vehicle used was the 2.2-litre diesel automatic variant of the Scorpio N. This engine and gearbox combination is well-suited for long-distance travel. The engine operates smoothly and the automatic transmission shifts seamlessly in most situations. On the expressway, the Scorpio N maintains highway speeds easily and does not feel strained. Its high-speed stability is notable, especially given its body-on-frame construction. The ride quality remains comfortable over most road imperfections, such as expansion joints and undulations.

The Scorpio N offers a commanding driving position, providing a high seating stance and clear road visibility. This feature is valued by drivers who prefer traditional SUV characteristics. The elevated position enhances comfort during long drives and adds to the vehicle's road presence.

City Driving and Practicality

In Lucknow's city traffic, the Scorpio N's electric power-assisted steering proved effective. The steering is light at low speeds, making it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces and parking areas. It firms up as speed increases, maintaining consistent feedback. The Sony audio system delivered clear sound, keeping the cabin lively during the trip.

However, some drawbacks became apparent in city conditions. The suspension can feel slightly harsh at low speeds, with noticeable vertical movement over poor road surfaces. This is an improvement over the older Scorpio Classic but still reflects the ladder-frame design. Another issue is the seat ventilation control, which is only accessible through the touchscreen climate menu, making quick adjustments inconvenient while driving.

Practical limitations include restricted boot space, especially with the third row in use. Even when folded, the available luggage area is less than expected for an SUV of this size. A version without the third row would benefit buyers needing more cargo space. The 57-litre fuel tank also limits range, especially compared to the 60-litre tank in the Scorpio Classic. A larger, 65-litre tank would reduce fuel stops on long trips.

Fuel Efficiency and Local Experience

The Scorpio N achieved about 14 km/l on the expressway and 12 km/l in city conditions. These figures are typical for diesel automatic SUVs in this segment. The visit to Lucknow included attending the Mahindra Sanatkada Lucknow Festival, which showcases Awadhi culture through art, crafts, food, and performances. Local culinary highlights included galouti kebabs at Tunday Kababi and street-side chaat, reflecting the city's rich food heritage.

Trips to the outskirts, including a family farm, demonstrated the Scorpio N's ground clearance and robust build on uneven, dusty roads. The journey highlighted the vehicle's strengths in highway comfort and stability, as well as areas for improvement in practicality and low-speed ride quality. The Scorpio N remains a capable SUV for long drives, with potential for further refinement in future updates.
