Mahindra XUV 3XO to Get CNG Variant, Targeting Tata Nexon Rivalry

Mahindra plans to introduce a CNG powertrain for the XUV 3XO, expanding its lineup beyond petrol, diesel, and electric options. This move follows the growing popularity of CNG vehicles, which held a 21.98 percent market share in FY2026, second only to petrol. The addition will give the XUV 3XO one of the most diverse powertrain offerings in its segment and position it directly against the Tata Nexon, the compact SUV segment's top seller for the past two financial years.

Key Highlights

  • Mahindra XUV 3XO to add CNG powertrain by late 2026 or early next year
  • CNG vehicles held 21.98 percent market share in FY2026 second only to petrol
  • XUV 3XO sold 1,00,029 units in 2025 while Tata Nexon sold 2,00,559 units

Mahindra's CNG Strategy

The company aims to offer a more fuel-efficient powertrain as stricter CAFE 3 emission norms approach. CNG will help Mahindra balance CO2 emissions from its heavier, ladder-frame diesel SUVs, which currently make up a significant part of its sales. In the past, Mahindra provided CNG options for models like the Logan and KUV100 Trip, though the latter was mainly for fleet customers.

Currently, the XUV 3XO comes with two 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo petrol engines: a 111hp multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) and a 131hp direct injection (DI). Sources indicate Mahindra will pair the CNG option with the MPFI engine. This engine type is less costly to produce and easier to adapt for CNG, as fuel is injected into the intake manifold. Adapting a DI engine for CNG is more complex and expensive, and sometimes not feasible.

Technical and Market Considerations

One challenge is the XUV 3XO's 295-litre boot, already the smallest in its segment. Installing a traditional CNG tank could further reduce available space. Mahindra may consider a dual-cylinder setup, similar to the Tata Nexon, to preserve more boot space. Another possibility is an underbody tank, a solution used by Maruti on the Victoris and expected in the upcoming Brezza facelift.

The XUV 3XO CNG is expected to launch by the end of 2026 or early the following year. In 2025, Mahindra sold 1,00,029 units of the XUV 3XO, while Tata sold 2,00,559 units of the Nexon. The new CNG variant could help Mahindra increase its presence in CNG-focused markets such as Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, and Mumbai, and potentially boost overall sales volumes.
