The Maruti Suzuki Ignis launched in 2017 and received a facelift in 2020. It was known for its unconventional design and compact size. The hatchback was built on the lightweight Heartect platform and powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine. Buyers could choose between manual and AMT gearbox options. Higher trims offered features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, automatic climate control, and push-button start.

Despite its ease of driving and fuel efficiency, the Ignis struggled with polarizing design and limited appeal. These factors, combined with changing consumer preferences, led to a gradual decline in sales. The decision to discontinue the Ignis reflects a shift in Maruti Suzuki’s strategy for the entry-level premium segment.

Shift Toward SUVs and Future Plans

The Indian car market has seen a strong shift toward SUVs and crossover vehicles in recent years. Maruti Suzuki is reportedly developing a new small SUV, codenamed Y43, to replace the Ignis in its lineup. This upcoming model is expected to compete with rivals like the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter, both of which have gained significant traction in the segment.

The new SUV will likely be positioned below the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and sold through NEXA dealerships. It is expected to use a 1.2-litre petrol engine, possibly featuring Dualjet technology. Maruti Suzuki may also consider offering multiple powertrain options, though this has not been confirmed.

The segment has evolved rapidly, with competitors offering petrol, CNG, and electric variants, as well as frequent feature updates. Maruti Suzuki’s move to discontinue the Ignis and focus on SUVs aligns with broader market trends and changing consumer preferences in India.
