In August 2024, Maruti Suzuki reported an 8.35% year-on-year (YoY) decline in passenger vehicle sales and a 3.13% decrease in year-to-date (YTD) sales. However, exports showed a positive trend, with a 5.64% YoY increase and a 9.55% YTD growth. The decline in domestic passenger vehicle sales over recent months and the past year is attributed primarily to stagnating income growth, which has affected consumers' purchasing power.
Maruti experienced mixed results across various segments, with some areas showing growth while others saw a decline. This analysis examines the sales performance across different segments, comparing August 2024 data with the same period in 2023 and the cumulative performance for FY 2024-25 against FY 2023-24.

The cumulative sales from April to August also show a significant decrease of 17.3% compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. This decline suggests a shift in consumer preference towards larger vehicles or increased competition in the mini-segment market.

This indicates a strong consumer preference for SUVs, aligning with the global trend towards larger, more versatile vehicles.

However, the growth in the Utility Vehicles segment and positive trends in export sales provide a silver lining. Maruti may need to focus on bolstering its presence in the high-growth SUV market while addressing the decline in smaller segments to maintain overall market share and profitability.
