MG Motor India confirms a new electric car launch around the 2024 festive season, anticipating increased production capacity and potential Baojun Yep eSUV introduction.

MG Motor India, a prominent player in the Indian automotive market, is set to launch its third electric vehicle during the upcoming festive season. Rajeev Chaba, Managing Director of MG Motor India, has officially confirmed the plans, highlighting the company's commitment to the growing electric vehicle (EV) segment in the country.
With the Indian economy flourishing, consumers are increasingly focused on enhancing their car ownership experience. Electric vehicles, known for their lively performance and eco-conscious appeal, have gained traction. Currently constituting around 2% of all passenger vehicles sold in India, industry speculations suggest that EVs could represent 15% to 20% of the market by the end of the decade.
Recognizing the evolving trend, MG Motor India has been actively participating in the electric car segment, with the ZS EV and Comet already in its portfolio. EVs currently contribute to 25% of MG Motor India’s sales volumes, and the upcoming launch is expected to further boost this share.

Rajeev Chaba, MD of MG Motor India, has officially confirmed the launch of a new electric car later this year. This marks a significant step for MG Motor, possibly being the first vehicle under MG branding following the strategic joint venture between SAIC Motor and JSW Group.
There are indications of a potential increase in production capacity at MG’s Halol plant in Gujarat. The company sold around 60,000 vehicles in India last year, and the production capacity is expected to expand to 80,000 to 90,000 units in 2024. The infusion of capital from JSW Group, holding a 35% stake, is anticipated to provide the necessary impetus for MG to expand its operations in India.

MG Motor India aims to double its portfolio by the end of 2025, with the new electric vehicle slated for launch during the festive season of 2024. Potential vehicles include the MG4 electric hatchback, MG5 electric estate car, or Mifa 9 electric MPV, as showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo.
Considering the prospective vehicles from SAIC Group’s global portfolio, the Baojun Yep eSUV under MG branding might be the best bet for India. Based on the Wuling Air EV, introduced in India as the Comet, its attractive design and relatively affordable price tag could make it a winning formula for MG Motor India in the competitive Indian EV market.
