JSW MG Motor India is preparing to take another significant step in its electrification journey with the debut of its new plug-in hybrid SUV on July 16. While the company has not officially confirmed the model name, industry reports strongly indicate that the upcoming SUV will be based on the globally sold Wuling Starlight platform, bringing MG's first PHEV technology to Indian buyers.

The upcoming model is expected to strengthen MG's growing new-energy portfolio alongside the Comet EV, Windsor EV, and ZS EV. Positioned as a premium three-row family SUV, the Starlight-based PHEV could offer an attractive blend of electric driving capability, long-distance practicality and modern technology, giving customers an alternative to conventional petrol, diesel and strong-hybrid SUVs.

Design and Styling

The India-bound MG Starlight 650 Plug-in Hybrid is expected to adopt a contemporary SUV design inspired by the international Wuling Starlight 560. Its front fascia is likely to feature sleek LED headlamps, a closed-off upper grille, sculpted bumper, and integrated daytime running lights that deliver a premium road presence.

From the side, the SUV is expected to feature clean body lines, muscular wheel arches, and stylish 18-inch alloy wheels. A long wheelbase, roof rails and a floating roof design further enhance its family-orientated appeal, while connected LED tail lamps at the rear provide a modern finishing touch. Reports suggest the SUV measures around 4.7 metres in length, positioning it among premium three-row SUVs in India.

Interiors & Cabin Space

Inside, MG is expected to focus on comfort and practicality. The cabin is likely to feature a minimalist dashboard layout with premium soft-touch materials, leatherette upholstery, and a spacious three-row seating configuration suitable for family buyers.

A large panoramic sunroof, powered front seats, ambient lighting, and generous second-row legroom are also expected to be part of the package. The flexible seating arrangement should make the SUV equally capable of handling everyday commuting and long-distance touring.

Features and Technology

Technology is expected to remain one of the SUV's biggest highlights. The Starlight-based model is likely to feature a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with an 8.8-inch fully digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging and connected car technology.

Additional features could include automatic climate control, a premium audio system, multiple USB charging ports, over-the-air software updates, and MG's latest connected vehicle suite. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are also expected to be available, enhancing convenience and driver confidence.

Engine and Performance

The MG Motors plug-in hybrid version combines a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery pack. The system produces approximately 194 HP and 230 Nm of combined torque, while offering up to 100 km of pure-electric driving range under the CLTC testing cycle.

The powertrain is expected to deliver quiet city driving in EV mode while retaining the flexibility of a petrol engine for longer journeys. If launched with similar specifications, the SUV would become one of the most capable plug-in hybrid offerings in the Indian market.

Safety Specs

The upcoming SUV is expected to feature multiple airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ABS with EBD, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, a 360-degree camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system and front and rear parking sensors.

Higher variants are also expected to include Level 2 ADAS functions such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning, aligning with MG's focus on advanced safety technologies.
