Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited (MSSSL) is a joint venture between India’s two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj Group and Japanese Sumitomo Corporation. On September 1, 2025, under a mutual partnership agreement, MSSSL announced an investment of approximately Rs 2,345 crore in a Greenfield plant in Karnataka. With this collaboration, the MSSSL productive potential will increase to 700,000 tons per annum, positioning it among India’s preeminent special steel manufacturers.
This investment will represent an important factor in the development of MSSSL’s long-term growth. However, this capital investment is currently subject to environmental clearances. Positioned to meet India's growing demand for high-performance steel, MSSSL’s strategy is directly aligned with national goals for industrial self-reliance and global competition across the market.
Rising Demands With Quality Expectations

The Mukand Sumi Steel Plant is addressing the rising demand with quality expectations to provide best-in-class materials, capable of competing overseas. To achieve such production at a larger scale, the plant is ready to invest in innovative technologies, upgrade the inspection facility, and produce essential grades for automotives and railways.
With huge investment capital, the facility will operate on a zero liquid, solid, and gaseous discharge model, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint. All these upgrades will bring over 95% of its energy requirements through renewable sources. Furthermore, MSSSL has committed to achieving net-zero steel manufacturing by 2050, with future phases integrating hydrogen-ready infrastructure and carbon capture technology.
Visionary Leadership and Partnerships

Speaking about the latest business collaboration deal, Mr. Vipul Mashruwala, President of Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited, said that “this expansion will play a significant role in our long-term growth.” He later added, “Guided by our Chairman, Mr. Niraj Bajaja, we are investing in sustainable and future-ready technologies that will make us strong in the global special steel market.”
Engineering Next-Gen Automotive Solutions
The MSSSL is fundamentally built on delivering high-quality steel for transmission, engine, suspension, and railway components. This Greenfield business expansion is commissioning a 0.35 million TPA integrated steel plant by 2028. With such investment capital, the brand will ensure that the plant's capacity is ready to serve and produce more high-quality OEMs.
MSSSL will be making itself a distinguished player in the industry, positioned to be the best in producing rolling, finishing, and marketing of premium-grade wire rods, bars, and wires. Automation, digital integration, and flexible production are at the heart of the new facility’s design. All these initiatives might sharpen MSSSL’s edge in meeting the crucial requirements of India’s and the international automotive sectors.
Supporting ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ & Industry 4.0

As per the reports, the Indian economy has increased the demand for high-quality special steel across the industrial, energy, and automotive sectors. MSSSL’s expansion not only meets current industrial needs but also strengthens India’s 4.0 Industrial initiative by supporting domestic innovation and meeting global calls for low-emission, high-performance steel.
