Suzuki is gearing up to introduce the latest version of its Swift Sport in September, with testing currently underway at the company's Japanese facility. This high-performance variant of the fourth-generation Swift is poised to bring significant improvements in weight reduction and powertrain technology. The new Swift Sport aims to enhance the power-to-weight ratio, building upon the achievements of its predecessor. Suzuki recently shared details about the upcoming Swift Sport during a technology strategy briefing, highlighting its commitment to performance and efficiency.
Key features and specifications of the upcoming Swift Sport include:
- Further weight reduction compared to the current model
- Body-in-white (BIW) weight expected to be less than the current 192 kg
- Overall vehicle weight varies by market: 1,025 kg for the European model, 970 kg for the Japanese version
- Increased dimensions: 3,990 mm length (+125 mm), 1,750 mm width (+15 mm)
- Height (1,500 mm) and wheelbase (2,450 mm) remain unchanged
- New K14D type 1.4L inline 4-cylinder turbo engine
- 48V ISG (integrated starter generator) mild-hybrid system
The new Swift Sport's powertrain marks a significant upgrade from the standard Swift's Z12E-type 1.2L inline 3 engine, which produces 82 PS. While the 48V mild-hybrid setup is already in use with the current Swift Sport hybrid model, the new version is expected to build upon this foundation. The current model's ISG generates 13.6 hp, with the Japanese variant offering even higher output.
Suzuki anticipates a 16% improvement in fuel efficiency and a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions, based on the NEDC combined cycle. The 6-speed manual transmission will offer better control over acceleration. The 48V system will assist during acceleration and high-load driving, while an advanced regeneration system will capture energy during deceleration to charge the dedicated lithium-ion battery.
In terms of pricing, while official figures have not been announced, industry experts expect the new Swift Sport to command a premium over the current model's starting price of 2,164,800 yen (approximately Rs 12.03 lakh) in Japan. The new version is likely to be priced at around 2.3 million yen (Rs 12.78 lakh), reflecting its advanced features and improved performance.
The new Swift Sport is also expected to offer attractive styling and color options, further enhancing its appeal in the compact performance segment. With its combination of lightweight design, advanced powertrain, and improved efficiency, the new Suzuki Swift Sport aims to set a new benchmark in its category when it launches this September.
