Volkswagen has officially unveiled its latest SUV, the Tayron, assured to take over the control from the Tiguan Allspace. This new model, known as the Tiguan L Pro in China, is gearing up for a global debut, starting with the Chinese market, where it will hit the roads under the Tiguan L Pro surname. India is next in line, with the Tayron anticipated to arrive by 2025, ready to compete with rivals such as the Jeep Meridian and the Skoda Kodiaq.
Tayron Design and Features
Built on Volkswagen's MQB EVO platform, the Tayron showcases a lengthened design compared to its predecessor, the Tiguan. Sporting a rounded look, an aggressive front bumper, chunky alloy wheels, and tasteful chrome accents, the Tayron makes a bold visual statement. The three-row SUV, which will also introduce a five-seater SUV-coupe later, boasts dimensions of 4,735mm in length, 1,859mm in width, and 1,682mm in height. The extended wheelbase measures 2,791mm, providing ample space for both passengers and cargo.

Inside, the Tayron shares similarities with the new Tiguan, featuring a freshly styled dashboard, illuminated with trim elements, and new-look air vents. Technological upgrades include a 10.3-inch digital instrument display and a central touchscreen infotainment system, available in either 12.9 or 15 inches depending on the variant.
Tayron Platform and Powertrain
Utilizing Volkswagen's MQB EVO platform, the Tayron incorporates stiffening measures, suspension upgrades, and 48V mild-hybrid compatibility. The powertrain options vary across markets, with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine for the Chinese variant and an expected 2.0-litre diesel in other regions. All powertrains feature a 48V mild-hybrid setup and offer the choice between 4WD or 2WD, depending on the configuration.
Volkswagen also introduces petrol plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options, equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine coupled with an electric motor, a 19.7kWh battery pack, and a 6-speed DSG gearbox. These PHEV variants, offering an electric-only range of over 100km and DC fast charging capability, will be available exclusively in 2WD.
India Launch and Global Manufacturing
The Tayron, now in its second generation, is hailed as a global model by Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schafer. Production will take place in Germany (Wolfsburg), China (Anting and Changchun), and Mexico (Peubla). Additionally, to serve the Indian market, the SUV will be assembled locally via CKD kits. The Tayron's entry into India aims to challenge competitors like the Jeep Meridian and the Skoda Kodiaq within the same price bracket.
