Key Highlights

  • Kia India teases new hybrid and electric vehicle launches.
  • Syros EV is likely to debut in July with two battery options.
  • Sorento hybrid expected as a seven-seater with 261 HP and 350 Nm
  • The Syros EV may feature stiffer suspension compared to the ICE version.

Syros EV Set for July Premiere

The Syros EV is expected to debut in July. This sub-4-metre electric vehicle will fill the space left by the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Syros. The Kia Syros EV is likely to be based on the international Hyundai Inster EV platform. Battery and motor options may include a 42 kWh battery paired with a 95 HP and 147 Nm motor and a 49 kWh battery with a 113 HP and 147 Nm motor.

The ICE Syros was known for its soft and springy rear suspension. The Kia Syros EV, with its floor pan-mounted battery pack, will likely have a stiffer suspension setup. This change could address previous concerns and help boost demand for the model.

Sorento Hybrid to Rival Segment Leaders

Kia is also preparing to introduce the Sorento as a flagship model. Recent spy shots showed the Sorento’s bodyshell being transported, suggesting that development is underway. The Sorento is expected to launch as a seven-seater plug-in hybrid in India.

The Kia Sorento hybrid will feature a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor, delivering a total output of 261 HP and 350 Nm of torque. This makes it the most powerful offering in its segment. For comparison, the Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron R-Line each offer 201 HP and 320 Nm; the MG Majestor produces 213 HP and 478 Nm; and the Toyota Fortuner delivers 201 HP and 500 Nm.

Market Position and Expectations

The Syros EV and Sorento hybrid will expand Kia’s portfolio in India, targeting both the compact electric and premium hybrid SUV segments. The Syros EV aims to attract buyers seeking an affordable electric vehicle, while the Sorento hybrid will compete with established seven-seater SUVs.

Kia’s move to introduce both hybrid and electric models aligns with the growing demand for alternative powertrains in the Indian market. The company’s strategy reflects a focus on innovation and meeting evolving consumer preferences.
