Next Gen Kia Sonet to Launch in 2027 With Hybrid Powertrain and New Platform
Kia will launch the next-generation Sonet compact SUV in India by 2027 with a new platform, enhanced features, and improved safety. A strong hybrid powertrain is planned for 2028 or 2029, making it a segment first.

Kia is preparing to launch the next-generation Sonet compact SUV in India by 2027. The new model, codenamed QY2E, will introduce major updates, including a new platform, more features, and enhanced safety. Since its debut in 2020 and a facelift in 2024, the Sonet has been a key product for Kia India, with monthly sales between 9,000 and 10,000 units. This makes it one of the top-selling cars in its segment.
Key Highlights
- Next generation Kia Sonet to launch in India by 2027
- New K1 platform will offer more space and improved safety features
- Strong hybrid powertrain expected to arrive around 2028 or 2029
Major Platform and Feature Upgrades
The next-gen Sonet will move to Kia’s K1 platform, replacing the current architecture. This platform, already used on the Syros, supports advanced features like over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. The K1 platform uses improved structural materials, which may help Kia target higher safety ratings for the new Sonet. The platform change will also allow for a longer wheelbase, increasing rear seat space and comfort. This mirrors Hyundai’s approach with the Venue, where newer models offer better rear seat comfort.
The new Sonet is expected to feature larger infotainment and instrument screens, possibly up to 12.3 inches. Another significant upgrade could be the introduction of Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), replacing the current Level 1 system.
Engine Options and Hybrid Introduction
At launch, the next-gen Sonet will likely retain its current engine lineup. This includes a 1.2-litre petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, along with existing transmission options. Kia is also developing a strong hybrid powertrain for the Sonet. However, this hybrid option is expected to arrive after the initial launch, likely around 2028 or 2029.
Currently, no sub-4m SUV in the Indian market offers a strong hybrid powertrain. The introduction of a hybrid Sonet could set a new benchmark in the segment. Other manufacturers, such as Maruti and Toyota, are also working on hybrid options for smaller cars, which may appear in future models like the Fronx and Brezza.
Market Position and Competition
The next-gen Sonet will continue to compete with popular models such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, and upcoming compact SUVs. With its planned upgrades in platform, features, and powertrain options, Kia aims to keep the Sonet competitive in the growing sub-4m SUV segment.
