Nissan has confirmed plans to launch the Patrol SUV in India, aiming to compete with established rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser. The announcement came during Nissan's 2026 Vision global business outlook event, where company president Thierry Sabbagh outlined the strategy for introducing flagship models to the Indian market.
Key Highlights
- Nissan confirms Patrol SUV India launch as a CBU import
- Patrol will compete with Toyota Land Cruiser and luxury SUVs
- Expected pricing starts at Rs 2 crore for base trims
- Seventh generation Patrol offers advanced tech and luxury features
- Engine options include 3.8-litre V6 and 3.5-litre twin turbo
Patrol SUV Launch Details
Nissan intends to bring the Patrol SUV to India as a completely built unit (CBU), using the homologation-free import rule. This regulation allows up to 2,500 passenger vehicles to be imported annually without local homologation. The Patrol will likely be offered in a single, top-spec trim, fully equipped with premium features.
The Patrol is Nissan's flagship SUV, known for its off-road capabilities, advanced technology, and luxury features. In other markets, such as the Middle East, the latest generation Patrol is already available. In the United States, it is sold as the Nissan Armada.
Market Position and Pricing
Nissan sees India as a growing market with significant potential, but also recognizes the intense competition. The Patrol will target luxury SUV buyers, taking on models like the Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus LX, Mercedes GLS, and BMW X7. Nissan aims to enhance its brand perception by offering a fully loaded product rather than focusing on a specific price segment.
Expected pricing for the Patrol SUV in India could start at around Rs 2 crore, including taxes, for the XE and SE trims. Higher trims, such as the Patrol Nismo or Patrol PRO-4X, could be priced between Rs 2.5 crore and over Rs 3 crore.
Performance and Features
The Nissan Patrol has been in production since 1951 and entered its seventh generation in 2024. Engine options include a 3.8-litre V6 producing 316 hp and 386 Nm of torque, and a 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo generating 425 hp and 700 Nm. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission designed for efficient fuel use and responsive acceleration.
The Patrol offers multiple drive modes, including Rock, Sand, Eco, Mud, Standard, and Sport, to adapt to different terrains. Key features include zero gravity seats, individual cooling zones with biometric cooling, a piano button e-shifter, a 28.6-inch display, head-up display, and a Klipsch premium audio system.
Nissan's decision to introduce the Patrol SUV reflects its strategy to strengthen its presence in India by offering both volume and halo products. The company continues to assess market conditions and adjust its portfolio to achieve growth targets.
