Royal Enfield is assessing the need for a completely knocked down (CKD) assembly facility in Mexico. This follows a significant rise in import tariffs on motorcycles in the country, according to CEO B Govindarajan. The company is reviewing its strategy after Mexico increased tariffs from 15 percent to 35 percent in January.
Key Highlights
- Royal Enfield reviews CKD plant option in Mexico after tariff rises to 35 percent
- International motorcycle sales reached 120,000 units with Rs 3,288 crore in revenue for FY26
- Brazil becomes Royal Enfield’s largest international market with 71 percent growth
- Five new models and 13 updates planned for Royal Enfield’s global portfolio this year
Govindarajan addressed the issue after Eicher Motors announced its FY26 earnings. He stated that Royal Enfield is evaluating whether a manufacturing facility in Mexico is necessary to address the higher tariffs. The company already operates several CKD assembly plants worldwide and may replicate this model in Mexico if required.
Tariff Impact and Strategic Response
Mexico's tariff increase has prompted Royal Enfield to reconsider its approach to the market. The company paid a 15 percent tariff previously, which rose to 35 percent at the start of the year. Govindarajan explained that Royal Enfield is studying the situation and will take action if needed. The company’s global experience with CKD plants positions it to adapt quickly to such changes.
Royal Enfield currently operates seven CKD assembly plants in countries including Brazil, Colombia, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Thailand. The company uses a standard approach to establish CKD facilities in new markets. This enables Royal Enfield to be closer to customers and respond to local market requirements efficiently.
International Expansion and Market Performance
Royal Enfield continues to expand its international operations, driven by rising demand for mid-sized motorcycles outside India. In the financial year ending March 2026, the company’s international volumes grew by about 20 percent. Royal Enfield sold approximately 120,000 motorcycles in overseas markets during the year, generating revenue of around Rs 3,288 crore.
Brazil has emerged as Royal Enfield’s largest international market outside India. The company reported 71 percent growth in Brazil last year, selling more than 25,000 motorcycles. Royal Enfield is also establishing a second CKD plant in Brazil to support its growth. The company works with two partners for CKD assembly in Brazil and is now developing its own facility to further strengthen local operations.
Govindarajan stated that Royal Enfield remains cautiously optimistic about its international business. The company continues to hold its market position despite global uncertainties.
Product Portfolio and Future Plans
Royal Enfield plans to expand its product portfolio this year. The company aims to introduce five all-new models and provide 13 updates to existing models. New launches include the Bullet 650, Himalayan 440, Continental GT750, Himalayan 750, and Scram 450. This strategy aligns with Royal Enfield’s broader global ambitions and its goal to strengthen its presence in international markets.
CarBike 360 Says
Royal Enfield’s potential CKD plant in Mexico signals a strategic shift to navigate evolving trade dynamics and strengthen its global footprint. By localizing assembly, the brand could improve pricing competitiveness and supply efficiency in key markets. If finalized, this move will not only support expansion in North America but also reinforce Royal Enfield’s long-term international growth ambitions.
