Skoda India plans on policy‑led EV push, ready to poised Kylaq exports under India–EU FTA
Skoda Auto India is aligning its EV plans with policy support while doubling down on ICE localization. The carmaker is preparing India‑built models like the Kylaq for future export opportunities.

Skoda Auto India is aligning its next phase of growth with clear policy signals on electrification and trade, rather than chasing short‑term trends in the EV space. While internal combustion engines (ICE) still drive most of its volumes, the company now sees regulation‑led EV uptake and the upcoming India–EU free trade agreement (FTA) as twin levers to sharpen its India strategy.
Executives say the brand wants to stay “relevant” across powertrains, using India both as a large domestic market and as an export base once FTA contours are fully in place. That means continuing to bet heavily on localized ICE products like the Kylaq, even as planning for electric models moves into an advanced stage and export opportunities to Europe open up under a more predictable tariff regime.
Policy‑driven EV adoption
Skoda’s view is that India’s EV curve is being pulled more by regulations and policy incentives than by organic consumer demand. Factors such as charging infrastructure gaps, range anxiety and price sensitivity continue to temper mass adoption, especially outside major metros.
Senior leaders expect the transition to be slower than in markets like China, which is why they argue that future policies must also recognize hybrids and plug‑in hybrids as meaningful “new energy” bridges to full electrification. The company is closely evaluating India’s new EV policy, which links lower import duties to a minimum investment commitment of 500 million dollars, to decide which EVs to bring, how fast, and whether via imports or local manufacturing.
Planning ICE To make EV for a better tomorrow
Skoda’s volume and profitability in India are anchored in ICE vehicles, a segment that still accounts for the overwhelming majority of the market. Brand leadership openly says the game plan is to stay strong in this 80‑plus percent ICE space while simultaneously building a credible presence in the emerging EV segment.
The Skoda Kylaq compact SUV, which helped Škoda more than double its India sales in 2025, remains central to that approach. With ten product actions lined up for 2026 and deeper penetration into smaller towns, the company is targeting another year of double‑digit growth even before EV volumes meaningfully kick in.
India–EU FTA as export
The India–EU FTA is emerging as a strategic opportunity rather than just a tariff tweak for Škoda Auto Volkswagen India. Management believes the agreement can accelerate technology transfer, ease non‑tariff barriers, and, crucially, turn India into an export hub for select models. Skoda is already studying exports of India‑built vehicles like the Kylaq to suitable European markets once the FTA is operational, even as limited volumes of fully built European cars flow into India at lower duties.
Localisation at the core
Under its India 2.0 strategy, Skoda Auto Volkswagen has steadily increased localization and now exports roughly a quarter of its Chakan plant production to global markets. The company is expanding its engineering and digital footprint in India and onboarding more local suppliers to support future programs, including electrified platforms.

Conclusion
Skoda’s evolving India playbook is no longer just about chasing volumes; it’s about timing the shift. As policy‑led EV adoption gathers pace and the India–EU FTA unlocks new export corridors, the brand appears poised to turn India into both a growth engine and a global export powerhouse.
