Choosing the Skoda Kylaq means prioritizing driving pleasure, solid European engineering, and top-notch safety over flashy features. Its 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine produces 115 PS and 178 Nm of torque, while the smooth 6-speed automatic makes both city drives and highway runs enjoyable. The Kylaq feels confident and engaging behind the wheel, which driving enthusiasts will appreciate. That said, buyers looking for a very soft ride or a wider rear seat for three adults may find some compromises, especially on rough roads. Still, with a large 446-litre boot and a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating, the Skoda Kylaq stands out as a strong and practical premium sub-compact SUV in India.

  • The engine has some initial turbo lag that can make it feel jerky in stop and go traffic.
  • The Kylaq does not have an Advanced Driver Assistance System.

Exterior & Design

The Kylaq’s design is in line with Skoda’s signature look, boasting a wide butterfly grille flanked by sleek LED headlamps. Its sharp creases and sporty bumper add to its bold appeal. Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the Kylaq measures just under 4 meters in length, making it agile for urban driving while maintaining a sturdy SUV stance. Its wheelbase of 2566 mm and ground clearance of around 189 mm enhance its road presence and versatility.

Features like clamshell-style bonnet lines, strong shoulder creases, and wrap-around tail lamps provide a premium touch. The alloy wheels and body cladding add a rugged yet refined appearance.

Skoda claims best-in-class boot space and smart packaging, a significant advantage for family buyers or those seeking a functional urban SUV. The Kylaq’s design reflects Skoda’s commitment to creating stylish, compact vehicles that offer a balance of practicality and sophistication.

Interior & FeaturesInterior & Features

The Kylaq features a modern design with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen at the center, flanked by chrome-accented air vents. A grey insert runs across the dashboard, adding to its aesthetic appeal.

The Kylaq brags a twin-spoke steering wheel, an 8-inch fully digital driver’s display, and touch-enabled climate control. Ventilated front seats with six-way power adjustment ensure comfort, while the rear seats offer adjustable headrests, ISOFIX mounts, and a foldable armrest with cupholders. The Kylaq comes equipped with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with a wireless charging pad.

Including an electric sunroof, ambient lighting, a cooled glovebox, rear AC vents, and a leatherette armrest also adding auto-folding ORVMs, push-button start, keyless entry, and an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror.

Engine & Performance

The Kylaq is powered by a 1.0-liter TSI turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine, which is shared with models like the Kushaq and Slavia. It produces 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

This engine offers a lively driving experience, with a robust mid-range torque curve peaking between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm, and a rev-friendly top end that peaks between 5,000 and 5,500 rpm. It’s particularly engaging for enthusiasts thanks to its sporty sound and short, precise manual throws. The automatic variant provides paddle shifters and a Sport mode for added convenience and fun.

Safety & Comfort

The Kylaq ensures a strong safety suite with 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, hill-hold assist, traction control, and a rear parking camera. Also including TPMS and multi-collision braking for additional safety assurance.

Ride & Handling

Built on the MQB A0-IN platform, the Kylaq showcases excellent handling characteristics. With enhanced torsional rigidity and a suspension setup softer than the Kushaq, it achieves a good balance between ride comfort and sporty dynamics. The SUV feels planted on high-speed corners and absorbs bumps gracefully, making it ideal for both city and highway use. Its direct steering and predictable body control instill confidence, especially for spirited drivers.

Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI Manual Review

18-Jun-26 | By ashish masih

What is it?

The Skoda Kylaq is the Czech carmaker's most affordable SUV for India and its answer to highly competitive compact SUVs such as the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO. Built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB-A0-IN platform, the Kylaq shares its underpinnings with the larger Kushaq and Slavia, but has been engineered to fit within the sub-four-metre category.

Unlike many rivals that focus heavily on features and gimmicks, the Kylaq follows Skoda's traditional strengths of solid engineering, mature driving manners and strong turbo-petrol performance. Here, we're driving the 1.0-litre TSI paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

So, does the smallest Skoda still deliver the brand's trademark driving appeal? Let's find out.

Exterior Design

The Kylaq may be Skoda's smallest SUV, but it certainly doesn't look like a budget offering. The styling is sharp, clean and unmistakably European.

At the front, the split-headlamp setup lends the SUV a modern appearance, while the signature Skoda grille sits proudly between sharply sculpted bonnet lines. The LED DRLs are slim and purposeful, giving the Kylaq a premium road presence that many rivals struggle to match.

Viewed from the side, the proportions are well balanced. Short overhangs, squared wheel arches and neatly integrated roof rails help create a rugged SUV stance despite the compact dimensions. Depending on the variant, the alloy wheel designs further enhance the premium appeal.

The rear design is perhaps the most distinctive angle. The new Skoda lettering stretches across the tailgate, while the clean bumper design and sleek tail-lamps ensure the Kylaq looks contemporary without appearing overly busy.

What stands out most is the restraint in the design. Unlike some competitors that rely on excessive creases and chrome elements, the Kylaq looks sophisticated and mature.

Interior Design and Quality

Step inside and the Kylaq immediately feels familiar to anyone who has experienced a modern Skoda.

The dashboard design is functional, uncluttered and driver-focused. Horizontal lines visually widen the cabin, while the neatly integrated infotainment display forms the centrepiece of the dashboard. Physical controls for key functions remain, which is a welcome decision in an era increasingly dominated by touch-sensitive interfaces.

Material quality is impressive for the segment. Soft-touch inserts may not be widespread, but the plastics feel robust and well assembled. The switchgear operates with a reassuring solidity, and panel gaps are consistently tight throughout the cabin.

The steering wheel deserves special mention. It's chunky, pleasant to hold and contributes significantly to the premium feel behind the wheel.

The overall impression is one of quality rather than flashiness. The Kylaq's cabin doesn't overwhelm you with visual drama, but it feels engineered to last.

Space and Rear Seat Comfort

Given its sub-four-metre dimensions, interior packaging is crucial, and the Kylaq performs admirably.

Front-seat occupants enjoy excellent visibility, supportive seats and a comfortable driving position. The wide range of seat and steering adjustments makes it easy to find the ideal setup.

Move to the rear and you'll find adequate space for two adults. Knee room is respectable, while headroom remains generous even for taller passengers. The cabin width also allows three passengers to squeeze in when required, although two adults will be far more comfortable on longer journeys.

Seat cushioning is well judged, offering a good balance between softness and support. The backrest angle is comfortable, and under-thigh support is acceptable by segment standards.

What particularly impresses is the overall sense of airiness. Large windows and sensible cabin design prevent the rear compartment from feeling cramped.

While rivals such as the Mahindra XUV 3XO and Tata Nexon may offer marginally more rear-seat room, the Kylaq remains comfortably competitive.

Boot Space and Practicality

Practicality has clearly been a priority for Skoda.

The boot is among the more usable spaces in the segment, offering enough room for multiple cabin bags, weekend luggage or airport runs without much compromise.

The loading lip is reasonably low, making it easy to load heavier items. The boot aperture itself is wide, allowing larger suitcases to fit without difficulty.

Additional storage spaces throughout the cabin further enhance practicality. Door pockets, cupholders, storage trays and smartphone spaces have all been thoughtfully integrated.

Like other Skodas, the Kylaq also incorporates several clever touches that make daily usability easier, staying true to the brand's "Simply Clever" philosophy.

Performance

Under the bonnet lies the familiar 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine.

This motor continues to be one of the strongest performers in the compact SUV category. It delivers a healthy amount of torque from low revs and feels noticeably more energetic than many naturally aspirated rivals.

In city traffic, the turbocharger's strong mid-range punch allows the Kylaq to make quick progress with minimal effort. Overtakes require fewer gear changes, and the engine remains responsive throughout most driving conditions.

The six-speed manual gearbox complements the engine well. Shift quality is precise, clutch action is light enough for urban use and gear ratios are sensibly chosen.

Push harder and the TSI engine reveals its enthusiastic character. The motor willingly revs towards the upper reaches of the rev range while maintaining a refined nature.

There is some three-cylinder vibration at idle and under hard acceleration, but it's never intrusive enough to spoil the experience.

For enthusiasts, the manual transmission remains the pick of the range, offering greater engagement and allowing drivers to extract the best from the turbocharged powertrain.

Drive and Handling

This is where the Kylaq truly distinguishes itself from much of the competition.

The steering feels precise and confidence inspiring. It may not be overflowing with feedback, but it delivers a level of accuracy rarely found in this segment.

The suspension strikes an impressive balance between comfort and control. At city speeds, it absorbs potholes and broken surfaces with maturity. On highways, the vehicle feels planted and reassuringly stable.

Body roll is well controlled, allowing the Kylaq to tackle corners with greater confidence than most compact SUVs. The chassis feels composed, predictable and genuinely enjoyable when driven enthusiastically.

High-speed stability is another standout characteristic. The SUV feels secure at triple-digit speeds and exhibits the solid, mature behaviour traditionally associated with larger European vehicles.

Perhaps the greatest compliment is that the Kylaq feels like a scaled-down Kushaq rather than an entry-level compromise.

Ride Comfort and Refinement

The ride quality is among the strongest aspects of the package.

Indian roads present a wide variety of challenges, from sharp-edged potholes to expansion joints and uneven surfaces. The Kylaq handles these obstacles with impressive composure.

At highway speeds, the suspension settles beautifully, resulting in a mature and comfortable ride experience.

Wind noise is well controlled, while road noise remains reasonably subdued. The engine itself is refined during steady cruising, making long-distance journeys relatively effortless.

Verdict

The Skoda Kylaq succeeds because it stays true to what the brand does best.

Rather than chasing feature-count supremacy, it focuses on delivering a premium driving experience, excellent build quality, strong performance and mature road manners. The 1.0 TSI manual in particular highlights the strengths of the platform, offering engaging performance and rewarding dynamics.

It isn't the most spacious SUV in the segment, nor does it possess the longest equipment list. However, what it does offer is a sense of engineering integrity that few rivals can match.

For buyers who value driving pleasure, high-speed stability, robust build quality and a premium feel over gimmicks and gadgetry, the Skoda Kylaq 1.0 TSI Manual emerges as one of the most complete and satisfying compact SUVs currently on sale in India.

Rating: 8.5/10

Bottom Line:

The Kylaq may be Skoda's entry-level SUV, but behind the wheel it feels anything but entry-level. It delivers the kind of sophistication, composure and driver involvement that remains increasingly rare in the compact SUV segment.

Decent car

16-Nov-24 | By Shefali
The Kylaq is decent for city use but lacks excitement for enthusiasts. The engine delivers average performance and feels underpowered compared to rivals like the Tata Nexon. Rear seat comfort and storage could be better, especially given its compact dimensions. Though it boasts good safety features and a sleek design, the overall package doesn't stand out in a highly competitive market.
Check4

good car but improvements can be there

16-Nov-24 | By akshita
While the Kylaq impresses with its solid handling and predictable dynamics, it falls short in rear seat space compared to some competitors. The 1.0 TSI engine performs admirably but can feel slightly noisy during hard acceleration. Pricing seems competitive, but an option for a more powerful engine would have been a great addition.
