Skoda Kylaq Sportline launch expected in September 2026 with 1.5L powertrain
Skoda is preparing to launch the Kylaq Sportline this September, with reports suggesting a more powerful 1.5 litre engine could be introduced alongside updated styling and features.

Skoda Auto India will launch the Sportline variant of its Kylaq model in September 2026. The company is also evaluating the feasibility of fitting a 1.5-litre engine to the Kylaq, according to brand director Ashish Gupta.
The Kylaq remains Skoda's top-selling model in India. In May 2026, it accounted for 3,443 out of 5,760 Skoda registrations, representing nearly 60 percent of the brand’s sales. However, this figure marks a 30 percent decline compared to May of the previous year.

Sportline Variant Details

The upcoming Skoda Kylaq Sportline variant will focus on styling enhancements rather than mechanical changes. The Kylaq is currently available only with a 999cc, three-cylinder 1.0 TSI turbo-petrol engine that produces 115 HP. This single powertrain limits Skoda’s options for offering a performance-focused version within the sub-4-meter tax bracket.
Gupta explained that the sub-4-meter segment in India is defined by both engine and vehicle size. This restricts the possibility of introducing a higher-performance model without losing tax benefits. “You can do something with the styling elements and give it a sporty touch, which we will be doing,” Gupta said. He noted that customer demand for a sportier variant influenced the decision to introduce the Sportline.
Potential for Larger Engine
Skoda is considering a 1.5-litre engine for the Kylaq, but this remains a research project. Gupta stated that fitting a larger engine would likely push the Kylaq beyond the four-meter limit, causing it to lose its tax advantage. He said, “I am sure customers would like to have the 1.5 litre in the Kylaq.” However, the business case for this upgrade is still under review.
In Skoda’s European lineup, the 1.5 TSI engine is the top option for small cars like the Fabia, Scala, and Kamiq. The four-cylinder 1.5 TSI produces around 150 HP, and the latest evo2 version reaches about 175 HP in a special Fabia edition. These figures are significantly higher than the Kylaq’s current output.
The pricing difference between markets is notable. The Fabia, Skoda’s smallest and most affordable car in Europe, starts at just over GBP 21,000 (approximately ₹22 lakh). In contrast, the Kylaq’s starting price in India is Rs 7.59 lakh. This pricing gap highlights the importance of the sub-4-meter tax benefit for locally built models. Introducing a 1.5-litre Kylaq would likely eliminate this advantage.

The upcoming Skoda Kylaq Sportline could mark an important step in expanding the brand’s compact SUV lineup with a stronger focus on performance and styling. If the 1.5-liter engine option is approved, it may significantly enhance its appeal among enthusiasts. With its expected September debut, the Kylaq Sportline is shaping up to be a compelling addition in its segment.
