EV Strategy and Market Approach

Suzuki E Access
Suzuki E Access

Suzuki entered the Indian electric scooter market later than most traditional manufacturers. The company began selling its first electric scooter, the e-Access, this year and dispatched 1,500 units by March 31. The Suzuki e-Access starts at an ex-showroom price of around Rs 1.9 lakh. In comparison, other major manufacturers are focusing on sub-Rs 1 lakh EV products to drive higher volumes.

Kenichi Umeda, President and Managing Director of Suzuki Motorcycle India, stated that the company’s EV journey in India will be gradual and closely aligned with market trends. Suzuki is currently focused on building customer familiarity, enhancing dealer capabilities, and establishing product credibility. The next phase will involve expanding into mainstream segments with a wider range of products and use cases.

Industry sources indicate Suzuki aims to cross 25,000 EV units in FY27, though the company has not set official volume targets. Suzuki management confirmed plans for a broader EV lineup across multiple price points and form factors, including extensions of existing brands and new models designed for Indian conditions.

Multi-Pathway Powertrain Development

Suzuki is not limiting its focus to electrification. The company continues to invest in cleaner ICE technology and alternative fuels, such as flex-fuel and CNG. Umeda confirmed ongoing development in these areas but did not specify launch timelines. He emphasized that customer acceptance and market readiness will determine the pace of new product introductions.

Competitors are also exploring alternative fuels. TVS is developing a CNG scooter, while Bajaj Auto has already launched a CNG motorcycle. Suzuki’s approach prioritizes battery durability, lifecycle value, and customer confidence over aggressive scaling.

Localisation and Future Plans

Localization is a key part of Suzuki India’s strategy. The company is increasing its focus on local supplier development and deeper value addition within India. This includes expanding engineering capabilities and reducing reliance on Japan for research and development.

The next phase will emphasize “make in India,” with local R&D and product development supporting cost competitiveness across all powertrains. Localization is expected to help Suzuki scale volumes, tailor products for Indian conditions, and position India as a global hub. India already accounts for over half of Suzuki’s global volumes, making this market central to the company’s long-term plans.
