Tata Motors has updated its technology roadmap for the Avinya electric vehicle portfolio. The company will use an EV platform derived from the Freelander architecture, which was developed within the Chery-JLR ecosystem. This change aims to speed up product development and balance costs with scalability.
Key Highlights
- Tata Motors to use Freelander-based EV platform for Avinya models
- First Avinya X model targeted for 2027 launch
- Battery capacities expected between 65kWh and 80kWh
- Production to take place at Panapakkam facility in Tamil Nadu
The first production vehicle under this new strategy will be the Avinya X. Tata Motors is currently developing this model, with a launch planned for 2027. The Avinya program was initially expected to use Jaguar Land Rover’s Electrified Modular Architecture. However, Tata Motors has chosen a different approach due to cost and business viability concerns for the intended product positioning and expected sales volumes.
Platform and Engineering Details
By adopting the Freelander-based architecture, Tata Motors gains access to a proven electric vehicle platform. This allows the company to focus its resources on software development, localisation, and customer-focused technologies. While the core platform comes from the Chery-JLR ecosystem, Tata Motors is adapting key vehicle systems for local needs.
This includes work on electronics, software integration, and market-specific engineering solutions. Engineering teams in India, the United Kingdom, and China are collaborating on the development process. Their goal is to prepare the platform for Tata Motors’ premium electric vehicle ambitions. Battery specifications for the first Avinya models are still being finalized. Industry estimates suggest battery capacities could range from 65 kWh to 80 kWh.
Production and Future Plans
Tata Group’s battery venture, Agratas, remains important for the company’s long-term electrification plans. However, the initial Avinya models may use batteries from existing suppliers before local production increases. The Avinya project highlights growing cooperation between Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover. Their collaboration covers engineering, electrification, and software development. This partnership is expected to expand to shared technologies and manufacturing efficiencies beyond individual vehicles.
In addition to the Avinya X, Tata Motors is considering a larger three-row electric SUV for the Avinya lineup. The long-term goal is to establish Avinya as a dedicated premium EV brand with several products across different segments. Manufacturing of the first Avinya model will take place at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ facility in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu.
The Chennai-Ranipet manufacturing ecosystem is also expected to support future production and localization efforts. Tata Motors has stated that Avinya will be developed as a global premium EV brand. The company plans to leverage scalable architectures, in-house engineering expertise, and collaborations with Jaguar Land Rover and technology partners to achieve this objective.
CarBike 360 Says
With the Avinya range, Tata Motors is clearly positioning itself for a stronger presence in the premium EV space. The adoption of a Freelander-derived platform signals global intent, while the 2027 timeline aligns with evolving market readiness. As competition intensifies, Avinya could play a crucial role in redefining Tata’s electric mobility strategy in India and beyond.
