Tata Motors, along with many other car manufacturers, have announced price hikes this year due to the stricter BS6 Phase 2 emission norms. In February of this year, Tata Motors announced a price hike for their entire range of vehicles. It is possible that there may be additional price increases later in the year.
Despite the increased cost, consumers will benefit from improved mileage in the BS6 Phase II versions of Nexon, Altroz, Punch, Tiago, and Tigor. The mileage gain across both petrol and diesel variants of these vehicles ranges from 0.60 kmpl to 2.40 kmpl.
This increase in mileage will result in significant cost savings, although CNG variants will remain the most cost-effective option where available. Among the petrol variants, the Tata Tigor has the lowest mileage gain at 0.60 kmpl, with a new mileage rating of 19.60 kmpl for the BS6 Phase II version. The Altroz petrol variant gains 0.70 kmpl, resulting in a new mileage rating of 19.30 kmpl.
Tata has announced that some of its petrol cars, namely Nexon, Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Altroz, have undergone improvements in terms of mileage and low-end driveability. The Nexon petrol variant has gained an additional 0.75 km and now boasts a mileage of 17.10 kmpl.
The Tiago has also seen an improvement in mileage, gaining 1 kmpl and reaching a new high of 20.01 kmpl. The Punch variant has seen the most significant improvement in mileage, gaining 1.13 kmpl and now delivering a mileage of 20.10 kmpl, which is the highest among all Tata petrol cars.
In addition to the mileage boost, Tata claims that the low-end driveability of the petrol variants of Punch and Altroz has also been improved. All four cars, including Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Altroz, come equipped with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that generates a maximum power of 88 PS, coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission that comes standard across all the cars. Altroz has the added option of a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCA), whereas the other three cars have a 5-speed AMT option.
Altroz also has the option of a more powerful 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that generates 110 PS, while the Nexon's 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine generates 120 PS and 170 Nm of torque. Overall, these improvements to the mileage and low-end driveability of the Tata petrol cars are aimed at providing a better driving experience for their customers.
Tata Motors offers two transmission options for its vehicles: a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT. The Altroz and Nexon diesel variants have undergone improvements in terms of fuel efficiency, with the Altroz now achieving a mileage of 23.60 kmpl, an increase of 0.60 kmpl, and the Nexon diesel MT achieving a mileage of 23.20 kmpl, an increase of 2.10 kmpl.
The Nexon diesel AMT has seen the highest mileage gain of 2.40 kmpl, now achieving a mileage of 24.10 kmpl. Tata claims that the BS6 Phase II versions of the Altroz diesel and Nexon diesel have improved driveability. The Altroz diesel is equipped with a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine that produces 90 PS and 200 Nm of torque. In comparison, the Nexon diesel produces 115 PS and 260 Nm of torque.
Tata has also increased the warranty period for all its cars, now covering three years or one lakh kilometres, an improvement from the previous warranty of two years or 75,000 km. These enhancements have made Tata's vehicles a better package overall, which could attract more customers.
Recently, Tata Motors celebrated the production milestone of five million passenger vehicles. The first million was achieved in 2004, and Tata can achieve the next five million production milestone at a faster pace if it can maintain its current popularity. In the next decade, a significant percentage of sales will come from Tata's new-gen electric cars, with the first one set to launch in 2024.
