Tata Motors is set to invest INR 9,000 crore to establish a new automobile plant in Tamil Nadu, focusing primarily on electric vehicles (EVs). The plant, which will be located in the Ranipet district, will have an annual production capacity of two lakh vehicles and is expected to create employment opportunities for around 5,000 people. The groundbreaking ceremony, scheduled for September 28, will be attended by Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Significance of the New Plant
The facility will be instrumental in producing electric vehicles for both Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Tata’s passenger EV models. Out of the plant's initial production capacity, one-third will likely be dedicated to manufacturing JLR EVs. Tata Motors has an ambitious plan to transition its entire JLR lineup to electric vehicles by 2026, and this plant will play a crucial role in achieving that goal.
Tamil Nadu's Position in EV Manufacturing
According to a senior official from the Tamil Nadu government, "Tamil Nadu is already a leader in EV manufacturing. The entry of Tata Motors and its focus on EVs will make the state a dominant player in that segment in the country." The new plant will span over 400 acres in the state-owned SIPCOT’s Panapakkam industrial estate in Ranipet, further solidifying Tamil Nadu's position as a hub for electric vehicle production.
Tata Group's Presence in Tamil Nadu
Tata Motors' venture into Tamil Nadu marks the latest expansion of the Tata Group within the state. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), another group company, operates its largest IT base in Tamil Nadu, employing nearly one lakh professionals at its Siruseri IT park near Chennai. Tata Electronics, which manufactures Apple products, has also set up operations in Krishnagiri and is looking to expand further in the region.
Conclusion
The new Tata Motors plant is expected to significantly contribute to both Tamil Nadu’s EV sector and the broader automotive industry in India. With the state government’s strong support and Tata Group’s continued investments, Tamil Nadu is poised to become a major player in the country’s EV ecosystem.
