Tata Motors launched the Tata Harrier and Safari with an all-new Hyperion turbo-petrol engine
Tata Motors unveils the petrol-powered Harrier and Safari with the revolutionary 1.5-liter Hyperion engine, delivering 170 HP, superior efficiency and 5-star safety.

Tata Motors has recently launched the petrol variants of its flagship SUVs, the Harrier and Safari, powered by the groundbreaking 1.5L Hyperion Turbo-GDi engine. For the 2026 iteration, priced aggressively at Rs 12.89 lakh for Harrier and Rs 13.29 lakh, for Safari (ex-showroom) in India. These models deliver 170 HP of power and 280 Nm of torque.
The Hyperion engine sets new benchmarks with AI-ML-optimized performance, segment-leading fuel efficiency, and a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating across the lineup. Harrier Petrol earned an India Book of Records entry for maximum efficiency in a 12-hour drive. Let’s check out what new features and updates the Harrier and Tata Safari provide with the all-new powertrain unit.
What’s Under The Hood? Hyperion Engine Technology
The all-new 1.5-liter inline-4 all-aluminum Hyperion Turbo-GDi engine features an electronically controlled variable-geometry turbocharger (eVGT) for lag-free boost across RPMs and center-mounted dual VVT for optimal airflow. This new engine also comes with sodium-cooled exhaust valves that handle high temperatures like race engines.
It also comes along with friction-optimized piston rings and an integrated exhaust manifold that ensures BS6 Phase 2 compliance and E20 compatibility. This modular design supports future hybrids, with proven prowess in the Tata Sierra achieving a 222 kmph top speed and 29.9 kmpl efficiency records at NATRAX.
Key Differences from the Previous Tata Motors Petrol Engine
Unlike Tata's prior 1.2L, 3-cylinder Revotron turbo-petrol engine that produces 118 HP to 125 HP of power in models like Nexon and Curvv, Hyperion is a larger 1.5-liter 4-cylinder TGDi unit with superior refinement and power density. It introduces eVGT versus fixed-geometry turbo, sodium-cooled valves absent in Revotron, and direct injection for better combustion efficiency.
