The strategic move comes as Tata Motors aims to solidify its position in the fiercely challenging midsize SUV segment, adding versatility and choice to cater to a broad spectrum of consumer preferences.

Scheduled for release in the second half of this year, the Curvv EV is assured to be the trendsetter. Tata Motors has opted for the proven 1.5-litre diesel engine that has been successfully employed in the Nexon SUV. Having undergone upgrades to comply with the BS6.2 emissions norms, the engine utilizes a cost-effective Passive Selective Catalytic Reduction system, eliminating the need for a urea tank and injection system. No changes in power and torque are expected, maintaining a robust 115hp and 260 Nm of torque, aligning with the Nexon's performance. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and an AMT, mirroring the choices available in the Nexon.

Targeting Midsize SUV Segment

With the inclusion of diesel, electric, and petrol powertrains, Tata Motors aims to make a significant impact in the highly competitive midsize SUV segment. Currently dominated by contenders like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, diesel variants constitute 24 percent of the segment. By offering a comprehensive range of options, Tata Motors aims to capture a substantial market share in this fiercely contested space, which presently boasts of eight formidable competitors.

Production and Launch Timeline

Insiders reveal that the series production of the Curvv is set to commence in April at Tata Motors' Ranjangaon plant near Pune. The company has set an ambitious sales target of around 48,000 units for the Curvv SUV, with the split between electric and combustion-engined iterations. Approximately 12,000 units are expected to come from the Curvv EV, highlighting Tata Motors' commitment to embracing multiple powertrain technologies to cater to diverse consumer preferences.
