Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced that the Innova HyCross has surpassed 2 lakh units sold in India. Sales began in January 2023, and the hybrid MPV has quickly become a major contributor to Toyota’s overall volumes. This milestone marks a shift in Toyota’s strategy as the company moves away from diesel models and focuses more on petrol and hybrid vehicles.
Key Highlights
- Toyota Innova HyCross crosses 2 lakh sales since launch in January 2023
- Hybrid MPV outsells diesel Innova Crysta in 2023 and subsequent years
- Toyota limits Crysta availability to manual variants only
- Hycross features a 2.0-litre petrol hybrid engine with 186 PS output
- Hybrid variant comes with 8-year battery warranty and 5-star Bharat NCAP rating
Sales Performance and Strategy Shift

Since its launch, the Innova HyCross has steadily overtaken the Innova Crysta in sales. In calendar year 2023, HyCross recorded 45,916 units sold, compared to Crysta’s 38,156 units. This lead widened in 2024 and 2025, with HyCross consistently outperforming its diesel sibling.
The decline in Crysta’s sales is not solely due to reduced demand. Toyota has deliberately limited Crysta’s availability in recent years. In 2022, production of the Crysta was temporarily suspended due to regulatory changes and a strategic shift. When the Crysta returned, it was available only with a manual gearbox, as the automatic variant was discontinued. Customers seeking an automatic MPV had to choose the HyCross, which increased its appeal, especially among urban buyers.
Hybrid Powertrain and Market Response
The strong hybrid powertrain is a key factor in the HyCross’ success. It features a 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with Toyota’s fifth-generation self-charging hybrid system, delivering a combined output of 186 PS. The hybrid system allows for significant electric-only driving in city conditions, which improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. This has attracted both private buyers and fleet operators.
The Innova Crysta continues to see demand, particularly in the fleet and taxi segment, where its diesel engine remains popular. However, stricter emission norms are expected to challenge the long-term viability of diesel models. Toyota is gradually phasing out the Crysta and is expected to introduce a more affordable hybrid variant of the HyCross for fleet customers. This will help Toyota maintain its strong position in the MPV taxi market while supporting its electrification goals.
Features and Future Outlook
The Innova HyCross is positioned as a premium MPV. It offers features such as powered Ottoman seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and Toyota Safety Sense ADAS. The model has received a 5-star safety rating under Bharat NCAP. Prices start at Rs 19.53 lakh (ex-showroom), and hybrid variants come with an 8-year battery warranty.
With over 2 lakh units sold, the Innova HyCross demonstrates the rising acceptance of hybrid vehicles in India. Toyota’s approach to limiting Crysta’s availability reflects a clear strategy to reduce dependence on diesel and shift towards cleaner powertrains. The HyCross is expected to play a larger role in Toyota’s India lineup as the company targets both private and fleet buyers with hybrid solutions.
