Volvo Cars India has discontinued the EX40 SUV, removing it from the official website. This move is temporary, as an updated EX40 is in development and expected to launch before the end of 2024. The EX40 has had a long presence in India, first arriving in 2018 as the XC40, Volvo's entry-level SUV.
In 2020, Volvo added a petrol variant, and in 2022, the electric XC40 Recharge marked the brand's entry into the luxury electric SUV segment. Last year, Volvo renamed the XC40 Recharge Single to EX40, aligning with its global rebranding of electric models.
Key Highlights
- Volvo EX40 discontinued in India, with an updated version expected by the end of 2024
- The current electric lineup includes EX30 and EC40, priced at Rs 41 lakh and Rs 59 lakh ex-showroom
- Flagship EX90 three-row electric SUV planned for India launch before the end of 2026
Current Volvo Electric SUV Lineup
With the EX40 temporarily discontinued, Volvo's electric vehicle range in India now includes two models. The EX30 serves as the entry-level electric SUV, priced at Rs. 41 lakh ex-showroom. It features a 69 kWh battery and a single motor mounted on the rear axle.
The EC40, priced at Rs. 59 lakh ex-showroom, is a coupe-style SUV with a larger 78 kWh battery and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. These two models represent Volvo's current electric offerings in the Indian market.
Upcoming Models and Market Plans

Volvo plans a busy second half of 2026 in India. The updated EX40 is set to return before the end of the year. In addition, Volvo will introduce the flagship EX90, a three-row electric SUV, to the Indian market. The Volvo EX90 will be Volvo's largest electric SUV and marks a significant step for the brand in India. Its launch will bring a full-size luxury electric option to a segment that is gradually expanding in the country.
Background and Market Context
The EX40's journey in India reflects Volvo's evolving strategy. The model began as the XC40 in 2018, transitioned to a petrol variant in 2020, and then to the electric XC40 Recharge in 2022. The rebranding to EX40 last year was part of Volvo's global shift to new electric model names.
The discontinuation of the EX40 is described as interim, with the updated version expected later this year. Volvo's focus remains on expanding its electric SUV lineup, with the EX30 and EC40 currently available and the EX90 and updated EX40 planned for the near future.

CarBike 360 Says
With the EX40 now discontinued, Volvo is clearly shifting focus toward a more advanced and premium electric lineup in India. The expected arrival of the updated model alongside the flagship EX90 by late 2026 signals a stronger push into the luxury EV space. This transition reflects Volvo’s long-term commitment to electrification and a more refined product strategy for Indian buyers.
