Xiaomi, the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer, has expanded its footprint in the automotive industry with the unveiling of its second electric vehicle, the YU7 SUV. The YU7 marks Xiaomi’s entry into the competitive SUV segment, following its debut EV, the SU7 sedan. The e-SUV will initially be launched in China by July 2025, with the brand focusing on domestic sales for the first two to three years due to strong local demand.
Dimensions
The YU7 retains the 3,000mm wheelbase of the SU7 sedan but measures slightly larger overall. With a length of 4,999mm, a width of 1,996mm, and a height of 1,600mm, the YU7 is not only larger than its predecessor but also significantly bigger than its closest competitor, the Tesla Model Y, which is 4,751mm long, 1,920mm wide, and 1,624mm tall.
Exterior Design
The YU7 borrows several design elements from the SU7, including:
- Blanked-off grille.
- Teardrop-style LED headlights.
- Flush pop-up door handles.
However, new touches like black wheel arches, redesigned alloy wheels, and an updated rear tail light section provide distinct SUV styling. The addition of large haunches, plastic cladding, and a swoopy crossover-like silhouette draws parallels to premium designs such as the Ferrari Purosangue.
A notable feature is the signature roof hump, hinting at the integration of LiDAR technology for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), potentially making the YU7 a standout in terms of safety and autonomous features.
Powertrain and Performance
The YU7 comes equipped with a dual-motor setup, delivering 299hp to the front and 392hp to the rear for a combined output of 691hp. This is an upgrade over the SU7 Max variant, which offers 673hp. Despite its hefty kerb weight of 2,405kg, the YU7 can achieve a top speed of 253kph, making it a formidable performer in its class.
For comparison, the SU7 Max, weighing 200kg less, reaches a higher top speed of 265kph.
Battery and Range
Xiaomi has partnered with CATL, the same battery supplier for Tesla, to power the YU7. While the exact capacity of the battery pack hasn’t been confirmed, it is expected to feature the 101kWh NMC battery used in the SU7. This battery provides up to 830km of CLTC range in the sedan, though the heavier YU7 will likely deliver slightly less on a single charge.
For potential entry-level variants, Xiaomi may adopt the LFP-chemistry batteries from the SU7’s RWD models, though no official announcement has been made about a two-wheel-drive version of the YU7.
Market Position and Future Plans
The YU7’s arrival positions Xiaomi as a serious contender in the high-performance electric SUV segment, targeting models like the Tesla Model Y. Despite showcasing the SU7 sedan in India to gauge interest, Xiaomi has not announced plans to launch its EVs in the Indian market anytime soon.
Instead, the brand is focused on consolidating its presence in China, aiming to establish itself as a key player in the domestic EV landscape before exploring international markets.
Conclusion
With its impressive performance, cutting-edge technology, and sleek design, the Xiaomi YU7 e-SUV underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and its ambition to compete with established electric vehicle manufacturers. As Xiaomi gears up to prioritize domestic sales, the YU7 is poised to capture significant attention in the rapidly growing Chinese EV market.
