Frantisek Janecek started Jawa in Prague, the capital of Czech Republic in 1929. He acquired Wanderer motorcycles, henceforth the brand ‘Jawa’ was born with the combination of the first two letters of his name and Wanderer.

Jawa motorcycles were sold in India during the 1960s under the Ideal Jawa brand. By 1973, Jawa bikes began selling under the aegis of the ‘Yezdi’ Brand. However, the manufacturing of Jawa two-wheelers halted in 1996.

Globally in 1997 the Jawa Moto company was established as a successor of the original Jawa. The company still makes 350cc two-stroke engine bikes and retails them to Central American nations. Moreover, Jawa also produces a 4-stroke, single-cylinder 660cc bike which powers the Jawa 660 series.
