Key Highlights

  • 2026 Triumph Speed 350 units arrive at showrooms ahead of April 6 launch
  • Motorcycle retains 400 badge and design despite possible sub-350cc engine
  • Engine change aligns with GST rules affecting motorcycles above 350cc
  • New engine delivers 40.6 PS at 9000 rpm and 33.2 Nm at 7500 rpm
  • Pricing may stay unchanged as Bajaj absorbs GST impact

However, sources indicate these new units may feature a sub-350cc engine. This change aligns with revised GST regulations, which place motorcycles above 350cc in a higher tax bracket. The move allows Bajaj-Triumph to optimise pricing for the Indian market.

Design and Visual Identity

The 2026 Speed 400 retains its familiar styling, including the same body panels, colour schemes, and silhouette. The branding remains ‘Speed 400’, suggesting Bajaj-Triumph will maintain its existing visual identity and naming strategy, even with a possible change in engine displacement.

This approach is not uncommon in the industry. For example, Bajaj’s Dominar 400 uses a 373cc engine despite its name. Recent images show the 2026 Speed 400 in Racing Red / Pearl Metallic White and Racing Yellow / Pearl Metallic White at showrooms.

Engine and Technical Updates

The main change is expected beneath the bodywork. Bajaj Auto has developed a new engine to comply with GST 2.0 norms. This engine will have a displacement below 350cc, replacing the current 398.15cc unit across the Triumph 400 lineup. Models affected include the Speed 400, Scrambler 400X, Speed T4, Scrambler 400 XC, and the upcoming Thruxton 400.

Official specifications are not yet released. However, the new engine is likely derived from the existing platform, possibly with a reduced bore but the same stroke. The new engine will produce 40.6 PS at 9000 rpm and 33.2 Nm at 7500 rpm. This output is similar to the previous engine, though torque has decreased.

The 6-speed gearbox and slipper clutch are expected to continue. Pricing may remain unchanged, as Bajaj previously absorbed the GST increase for motorcycles above 350cc instead of passing it to customers.

Launch and Market Impact

With units already at showrooms, an official announcement is expected soon. The launch on April 6 will confirm if Bajaj-Triumph keeps the ‘400’ branding while introducing the smaller engine. This strategy may help the company remain competitive in the evolving regulatory environment.
