BMW iX3 Wins 2026 World Car of the Year at New York Auto Show

The BMW iX3 has secured the 2026 World Car of the Year (WCOTY) award. The announcement took place at the New York International Auto Show on April 1. The iX3 surpassed the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Palisade, which were the other two finalists for the prestigious award.

WCOTY Eligibility and Selection
To qualify for the WCOTY award, vehicles must be produced in volumes of at least 10,000 units per year. They must be priced below the luxury segment in their primary markets. Eligible models also need to be available in at least two major car markets, such as China, Europe, India, Japan, Korea, Latin America, or the US. These vehicles must be on sale on at least two continents between January 1, 2025, and March 30, 2026.
The World Car Awards jury consisted of 98 automotive journalists from various global publications. Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India, represented India on the jury panel.
Other Award Categories and Contenders
The World Car Awards also recognized winners in six additional categories. The Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Palisade were the main competitors for the overall title. Other notable contenders included the Baojun Yep Plus, Chevrolet Spark EUV, and Hyundai Venue. In other categories, the Cadillac Vistiq and Volvo ES90 were among the finalists. Performance models such as the BMW M2 CS and Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray also competed for honors.
Individual awards were presented as well. David Craig from General Motors and Tisha Johnson from Slate were recognized for their contributions to the automotive industry.
Industry Developments Announced
During the event, Chery-JLR announced the revival of the Freelander nameplate with the new Concept 97. Jaguar also revealed plans to introduce a new four-door electric GT in September.
