BYD avoids price war in South Africa as EV competition intensifies
BYD is steering clear of a price war in South Africa, opting instead to build its brand and preserve pricing discipline as EV competition grows.

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is steering clear of a price war in South Africa, despite increased competition in the country's auto market. Steve Chang, managing director of BYD Auto South Africa, confirmed this approach during an interview at the local launch of the BYD ATTO 8 plug-in hybrid SUV.
Key Highlights
- BYD avoids price cuts in South Africa's competitive electric vehicle market
- BYD sold 589 vehicles in March 2026 just behind Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis
- ATTO 8 plug-in hybrid SUV launched at over 1 million rand or 61,046 dollars
- South Africa's new energy vehicle sales rose 7.1 percent to 16716 units in 2025
- BYD focuses on consumer education and long-term brand value
BYD's Market Strategy

South Africa is experiencing a rise in new electric, plug-in hybrid, range-extender, and traditional hybrid car brands. Many of these brands, particularly from China, are using aggressive pricing and launch discounts to gain market share. The market, however, remains dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles.
Unlike several competitors, BYD has chosen not to pursue immediate sales growth through discounts. Chang stated, "We're not chasing numbers, not yet. We are doing things a bit differently, slower, in other people's opinions. But we're trying to build a brand."
BYD published its monthly sales figures for the first time, reporting 589 units sold in March. This figure places BYD just behind Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis and ahead of established brands such as Volvo.
Focus on Brand and Value
South Africa's new energy vehicle market remains small but is expanding. Sales increased by 7.1 percent to 16,716 units in 2025 as hybrids and plug-in models gain popularity. Chang explained that frequent price cuts could hurt resale values and brand perception. "We don't want to discount our people too much because we care about the first buyers, we care about the registry value of the vehicle, and we care about the brand value," he said.
Instead, BYD aims for "price parity," offering electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles at prices similar to petrol or diesel models. The newly launched seven-seater ATTO 8 SUV starts at just over 1 million rand, or $61,046.
Consumer Education and Expansion
BYD entered the South African market in 2023 as part of its global expansion strategy. The company has prioritized educating consumers about both the BYD brand and electric vehicle technology. Chang emphasized, "We spend a lot of money and resources on market education. We're very patient.
We know we need to work with South Africa's pace and introduce the product step by step. "BYD's approach reflects a long-term strategy focused on sustainable growth and brand value in a rapidly evolving market.

Instead of chasing short-term gains through steep discounts, BYD is betting on stronger brand recognition, wider model appeal, and a more stable pricing strategy in South Africa. As the EV market gradually expands, that approach may help the company build trust with buyers and protect long-term value. In a fast-changing market, patience could prove more rewarding than aggressive price cuts.
