Chery-JLR unveils Freelander 8 as first model under revived Freelander brand
The Freelander nameplate returns with the all-new Freelander 8, developed under the Chery-JLR partnership, signaling a fresh strategy in the premium SUV segment.

Chery-JLR has unveiled the Freelander 8, the first production model under the revived Freelander brand. This new SUV is based on the Concept 97, which was revealed earlier in the month. The Freelander 8 marks the start of a plan to launch six models under the Freelander name over the next five years.
Key Highlights
- Chery-JLR reveals Freelander 8 as first production model under Freelander brand
- Freelander 8 features design elements from Concept 97 and original Freelander
- SUV supports electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains

- Expected launch in China in second half of 2026
Freelander 8 Design and Features

The Freelander 8 closely follows the design of the Concept 97. It pays tribute to the original Freelander by using a triangular glass motif throughout its exterior. The front of the Freelander 8 features rectangular elements and air vents on the bumper, differing from the blanked-off front of the concept. The side profile appears similar to the concept, but the production model replaces the concept’s suicide doors with regular opening doors. Large dual-tone alloy wheels from the concept are retained. The SUV also features ‘Freelander’ branding on both the grille and tailgate.
Chery-JLR has not released official images of the interior. However, the company confirmed that the Freelander 8 will have a dash-integrated Mini LED screen, similar to the concept. This screen spans the windshield and displays real-time vehicle status, road conditions, weather, and navigation data. The SUV will offer “elevated” front-row seats for a better view of the road and “zero-gravity” rear seats in the second row, suggesting high reclining angles. The Freelander 8 is expected to have a 6-seater configuration.
Platform, Technology, and Launch Plans
The Freelander 8 is built on a dedicated platform that supports electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains. While detailed specifications are not yet available, electric versions will use an 800V architecture. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) will rely on a Huawei-developed system and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor. The vehicle’s electrical systems will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 chip. A multi-terrain management system will also be included.
Chery-JLR has not confirmed an official launch date for the Freelander 8. However, the SUV is expected to arrive in the second half of 2026. The initial launch will take place in China, with a global rollout planned for a later date. There is no confirmation yet regarding the model’s arrival in the Indian market.
