The Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association (GEMA) has adopted Maruti Suzuki's E85-compatible flex-fuel vehicle technology. This move aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of E85 vehicles and accelerate domestic biofuel demand. The announcement was made on 8 June 2026, marking a significant step for India's grain-based ethanol producers.

Key Highlights

  • Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association adopts Maruti Suzuki E85 flex-fuel vehicle technology
  • The national fuel blending program increased from 1.5 percent to 20 percent over the past decade
  • E85-compatible vehicles support operational readiness for higher biofuel blends in India
  • The automaker aims to reduce vehicle development cycles from 48 months to 36 months

GEMA, representing the country's grain ethanol producers, has integrated E85-compatible vehicles into its operations. The goal is to validate next-generation renewable fuel systems within India's commercial mobility sector. This adoption follows the successful expansion of the national fuel blending program, which increased average blending from about 1.5 percent to 20 percent over the past decade.

The association's move comes as the domestic manufacturing sector prepares for further market growth. Industrial bodies are now focusing on new applications, such as E85 transport solutions and ethanol-based cooking infrastructure. The adoption of E85 technology aligns with the recent commercial launch of E85 fuel in India. This provides a clear pathway for original equipment manufacturers to increase the use of localized fuels and reduce dependence on global crude oil prices.

Strategic Impact on Biofuel Sector

Dr. C.K. Jain, President of GEMA, emphasized the importance of this milestone. He noted that reaching the 20 percent blending target was significant for the national biofuel program. However, he stated that the industry's long-term direction must go beyond E20 parameters to ensure continued growth and sustainability.

The integration of E85-compatible vehicles is expected to support the next phase of India's biofuel strategy. It demonstrates operational readiness for higher biofuel blends and encourages broader adoption across commercial fleets. The move also supports the government's efforts to insulate the economy from fluctuations in global crude oil prices.

Broader Industry Developments

Maruti Suzuki, the automaker behind the E85-compatible technology, is working to shorten development cycles for new vehicles. The company aims to reduce these cycles from 48 months to 36 months as it prepares for the launch of seven new SUVs. This focus on efficiency is part of a wider industry trend toward faster innovation and adaptation to changing fuel standards.

Other automotive and related sectors are also making adjustments in response to evolving fuel policies. For example, a German carmaker has revised retail tariffs for both locally produced and imported models to address domestic market shifts. In the tire industry, a leading manufacturer has partnered with Keshav Tyre Sales to offer advanced wheel alignment services and specialized support, reflecting ongoing adaptation across the automotive supply chain.
