Honda to develop India-specific cars, new models planned by 2030
Honda is realigning its India strategy with localized vehicle development and a fresh product pipeline aimed at long-term growth.

Honda announced a major change in its product development strategy for India at a global financial press conference in Japan. The company will now focus on designing vehicles specifically for the Indian market, aiming to balance performance and price more effectively. Honda will move away from its previous approach of selling global-standard cars in different regions.
Key Highlights
- Honda will develop vehicles specifically for the Indian market
- Plans include 10 new car models for India by 2030
- First new India-focused SUV model expected to arrive in 2028
- Honda's motorcycle business in India recorded 5.8 million units sold in the 2026 financial year
- The company aims to use local resources and supply chains for faster model development
India-Focused Development Strategy
Toshihiro Mibe, director, president, and representative executive officer at Honda, stated that the global standard approach may have been excessive for India. Honda plans to use local resources, including external partners, to develop and launch models tailored to Indian needs as quickly as possible. The company did not specify the exact number of new models for India, but had previously announced plans for 10 new cars by 2030.
Mibe acknowledged that Honda currently lacks a sufficient number of competitive models in each segment in India. To address this, the company will target two main segments: the sub-4-meter category and the mid-size category. At the press conference, Honda showcased two SUV silhouettes and confirmed that the first of these models will arrive in 2028. The company did not reveal the exact body types of these vehicles.
Leveraging the Motorcycle Business and Supply Chain
Honda's motorcycle business remains a key strength in India. In the 2026 financial year, Honda recorded annual motorcycle sales of 5.8 million units and holds the largest number of units in operation (UIO) in the country. Mibe said Honda plans to use its strong supply chain from the motorcycle business to support its car operations.
The company sees its large motorcycle customer base as a potential market for its cars. Many of Honda's two-wheeler models are priced close to entry-level automobiles, making it possible for existing customers to consider upgrading to a Honda car.
Market Position and Future Plans
Honda currently holds less than 2 percent market share in India and offers only three car models. The company hopes that locally tailored models will improve its position. However, Honda will need to refine its strategy, as the Honda Elevate, a model developed with a similar approach, has not yet achieved significant success in India.
Honda has identified North America, Japan, and India as priority markets for future growth. The company plans to allocate more resources to these regions to strengthen its presence and expand its product portfolio.

CarBike 360 Says
Honda’s renewed focus on India-specific development signals a strategic shift aimed at regaining lost ground in a highly competitive market. With new models tailored to local preferences and a stronger push for localization, the brand is positioning itself for long-term relevance. If executed well, this roadmap could help Honda rebuild momentum and strengthen its footprint in India by 2030.
