2026 Honda City Review - Finally a worthy update?

23-Jun-26 | By ASHISH MASIH

Honda City – What Is It?

Some cars become successful. Others become benchmarks.

For over two decades, the Honda City has been the car that every midsize sedan has been measured against. It has earned a loyal following thanks to its blend of reliability, refinement, space and that unmistakable Honda engineering charm. In many Indian households, owning a City wasn't just about buying a car—it was about moving up in life.

New City looks sleek and desirable. Finally appealing to a wider set of buyers.

Now, in 2026, Honda has given its iconic sedan another round of updates. The formula remains largely unchanged, but the City receives a sharper design, more technology, additional comfort features and a few thoughtful enhancements aimed at keeping it competitive in an SUV-dominated world. The familiar 1.5-litre petrol and e:HEV hybrid powertrains continue, as does Honda's focus on delivering a refined driving experience.

The question is, can the City still charm buyers when rivals offer turbocharged engines, larger screens and more aggressive styling? After spending time behind the wheel, it's clear that the City still possesses something many competitors don't—character.

Exterior Design: Elegant, Yet Sharper Than Ever

The Honda City has never been a car that screams for attention. Instead, it has always relied on understated elegance, and that's exactly what makes this latest update so successful.

Clean lines and a tight design remain City's design highlights even at the rear.

The redesigned front end immediately grabs your attention. The slimmer LED headlamps, wider grille and new lighting signature give the sedan a much more modern and sophisticated appearance. There's a newfound confidence to the way the car looks, and it finally feels contemporary enough to stand alongside newer rivals.

Viewed from the side, the City remains one of the most graceful sedans on sale today. The long bonnet, sleek roofline and well-balanced proportions continue to give it a premium presence that many SUVs at a similar price struggle to match.

Slick new design for alloy wheels makes the car look sporty yet youthful from a distance.

At the rear, the changes are subtle but effective. Revised lighting elements and minor cosmetic tweaks help freshen the look without losing the timeless design that City buyers have always appreciated.

Even in a parking lot filled with crossovers and SUVs, the Honda City still has an undeniable elegance about it.

Interior Design And Cabin Ambience: Class Above The Rest

Step inside and you're reminded why the City has always enjoyed a reputation for feeling more expensive than it actually is.

The cabin isn't flashy or over-styled. Instead, it focuses on quality, ergonomics and comfort. The dashboard layout remains clean and intuitive, while the updated infotainment system and digital displays help bring the experience up to date.

Easy on the eye design and intuitive controls make City's cabin the best in class.

Material quality continues to impress. The soft-touch surfaces, premium switchgear and solid build quality create an environment that feels genuinely sophisticated. Nothing feels cheap, and every touchpoint has that reassuring Honda solidity.

The addition of features such as ventilated seats, enhanced connectivity and improved cabin technology further elevates the ownership experience. On long drives especially, these upgrades make a meaningful difference.

Most importantly, the City's cabin still feels like a place where you want to spend time. It's comfortable, airy and wonderfully relaxing.

Space And Rear Seat Comfort: Still The Benchmark

If there's one area where the City continues to dominate, it's rear-seat comfort.

Open the rear door and you'll immediately notice the generous amount of space available. Legroom remains among the best in the segment, while the large windows and light-coloured cabin create an airy atmosphere.

This is a car that genuinely excels at carrying passengers.

The rear seat is still the benchmark in the segment for sheet poshness and comfort.

Whether you're being chauffeured through city traffic or embarking on a long highway journey, the rear seat remains one of the most comfortable places to be. The seat cushioning is excellent, headroom is generous and the backrest angle feels perfectly judged.

Up front, the story is equally positive. The seats are supportive, visibility is excellent and the driving position feels natural from the moment you settle in.

Few cars in this segment manage to blend driver appeal and passenger comfort as effectively as the City.

Boot Space And Practicality

The City's large dimensions pay dividends when it comes to practicality.

The boot remains enormous and can comfortably swallow luggage for a family holiday, airport runs or a weekend getaway. Loading larger bags is easy thanks to the wide opening and sensible shape.

Around the cabin, storage spaces are plentiful and thoughtfully positioned. There are useful door bins, cup holders and storage compartments that make everyday usage effortless.

The City might feel premium, but it never forgets that it's also meant to be practical.

Hybrid has lower boot space than regular model due to the battery pack and hybrid tech at the back.

Engine And Performance: Refinement Is Still King

Under the bonnet sits Honda's familiar 1.5-litre naturally aspirated i-VTEC petrol engine.

And frankly, that's excellent news.

In an era where many manufacturers are chasing power figures through turbocharging, Honda continues to prioritise smoothness and refinement. The result is an engine that feels silky, responsive and eager to rev.

Ride comfort is very good and the steering offers a very positive feedback.

The moment you press the accelerator, you're reminded why enthusiasts have always loved Honda petrol engines. The power delivery is linear, the throttle response is crisp and the engine remains remarkably refined throughout the rev range.

The six-speed manual remains a joy to use. Gear shifts are precise, clutch effort is light and the overall driving experience feels wonderfully engaging.

The CVT, meanwhile, prioritises smoothness and efficiency. It may not be the most exciting transmission on paper, but in everyday driving it suits the City's relaxed personality perfectly.

Then there's the e:HEV hybrid.

For buyers prioritising fuel efficiency without sacrificing refinement, the hybrid remains one of the most impressive powertrains available in India today. It combines effortless performance with exceptional economy, making it a compelling alternative to diesel-powered cars of the past.

Ride And Handling: Sophisticated And Confidence Inspiring

The Honda City has always excelled at making every journey feel effortless, and the 2026 model continues that tradition.

Ride quality is beautifully judged. The suspension absorbs imperfections with composure while still maintaining excellent body control at higher speeds.

Stability at high speeds is very good and makes the City an able long distance runner.

Whether you're navigating pothole-ridden city roads or cruising on a smooth expressway, the City feels remarkably mature.

At highway speeds, stability is particularly impressive. The sedan tracks straight, feels planted and inspires confidence during long-distance drives.

The steering is light enough for urban driving but gains reassuring weight as speeds increase. It's not the sharpest driver's car in the segment, but it strikes a balance that most buyers will appreciate.

The overall driving experience can best be described as effortless—a quality that becomes increasingly valuable the longer you live with the car.

Features And Safety: More Technology Than Ever

Honda has worked hard to ensure the City remains relevant in 2026, and the updated feature list reflects that effort.

The infotainment system is easier to use, connectivity features have improved and comfort equipment has been expanded. Ventilated seats, connected technology and a more comprehensive digital experience help bring the City in line with modern buyer expectations.

Safety is another strong point.

Honda Sensing ADAS continues to be available, adding advanced driver assistance features that were once reserved for luxury cars. Combined with the City's inherently solid construction, it creates a reassuring sense of security behind the wheel.

Verdict: The Sedan Everyone Else Still Chases

The 2026 Honda City isn't trying to be the fastest sedan in the segment.

It isn't trying to be the most aggressive looking either.

Instead, it focuses on what has always made the City special—comfort, refinement, practicality and an ownership experience that simply feels premium.

The updated styling gives it fresh appeal, the additional technology keeps it relevant and the superb petrol and hybrid powertrains continue to deliver one of the most polished driving experiences in the class.

Yes, rivals like the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia may offer more outright performance, but the City counters with an unmatched sense of maturity and sophistication.

And perhaps that's the City's greatest strength.

It doesn't try to impress you in the first five minutes.

It wins you over every single day you own it.

Final Score: 9/10

Refined, spacious, beautifully engineered and more desirable than ever, the Honda City remains one of India's finest everyday sedans and a reminder that great cars never go out of fashion.
