India’s passenger vehicle market sees seasonal dip in April 2026 registrations
Passenger vehicle registrations in India witnessed a typical seasonal decline in April 2026, reflecting a post-fiscal slowdown and shifting buyer sentiment across segments.

India’s passenger vehicle market is projected to register about 4.16 lakh units in April 2026, according to JATO Dynamics. This marks a decline from March’s 4.68 lakh units, as the market returns to normal after a fiscal year-end surge. Analysts attribute this moderation to seasonal and calendar factors, not to a weakening in consumer demand.
Key Highlights
- Passenger vehicle registrations projected at 4.16 lakh units in April 2026
- SUVs remain the largest segment with 2.52 lakh units despite a 4.3 percent monthly decline
- BEV registrations forecast at 22,266 units in April reflecting an 8.1 percent drop from March
- Urban markets account for 59.1 percent of April sales, with rural share stable at 16.9 percent
- Multiple new model and EV launches expected to support market recovery from May onwards
April Vehicle Registrations and Market Trends
Two-wheeler registrations are expected to reach 18.04 lakh units for April, following a similar seasonal pattern. Between 1 and 14 April, passenger vehicle registrations stood at 1.53 lakh units, which is within the expected seasonal range. The slowdown in April follows a strong fiscal year-end in March, when fleet and institutional purchases boosted volumes. This pattern is common as companies and dealers close out billing cycles before the financial year ends.
April’s effective selling days, at 26 to 28, are the shortest in early 2026. January had 32 to 34 selling days, while February and March had 27 to 29 and 28 to 30 days, respectively. When adjusted for selling days, April’s demand appears stable and in line with seasonal expectations.
Segment and Powertrain Performance

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) continue to dominate, with an estimated 2.52 lakh units in April. This is a 4.3% decline from March, consistent with historical April trends. SUVs have led the passenger vehicle market for several years, gaining share from sedans and hatchbacks as consumers prefer higher-riding, feature-rich vehicles. Despite the month-on-month dip, year-on-year SUV demand remains positive, and SUVs account for most volumes across petrol, hybrid, and electric powertrains.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are forecast at 22,266 units in April, down 8.1% from March. The decline follows a high concentration of fleet and institutional BEV purchases at the fiscal year-end. JATO describes this as a technical correction, not a sign of weakening consumer interest. BEV momentum remains positive, especially in the SUV segment and upper-trim models.
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are estimated at 12,298 units, showing resilience among electrified powertrains. Strong fuel efficiency and growing urban adoption support HEV demand. The segment appeals to consumers seeking a middle ground between petrol and fully electric vehicles, especially in cities with uneven charging infrastructure.
Petrol vehicles, projected at 2.28 lakh units, continue to anchor the market. The 6% month-on-month decline reflects reduced promotions after the fiscal year-end, not long-term demand erosion. Petrol remains the main fuel for entry-level and compact SUVs, where price sensitivity is highest.
Geographic Distribution and Market Outlook
Urban markets account for 59.1% of projected April sales, or about 2.46 lakh units. Metro markets hold a 24% share at around 0.99 lakh units, while rural markets represent 16.9% at approximately 70,286 units. This distribution has stayed consistent across recent months, indicating that volume swings are due to timing, not regional demand shifts.
The April to June 2026 quarter will see many new model launches, facelifts, and electric vehicle introductions. Late April will bring new models like the MG Majestor, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Volkswagen Taigun, Hyundai Exter, and an updated Tiago EV. May will see launches such as the Tata Sierra EV, Volvo EX90, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Scorpio-N facelift, and VinFast’s MPV. June will feature Nissan’s Tekton SUV, Kia’s Syros EV, and Hyundai’s Stargazer MPV. JATO expects these launches to drive inquiries and support a market recovery from May onward.
Ravi Bhatia, President of JATO Dynamics India, said the moderation is due to selling-day arithmetic, not demand deterioration. He described April as a normalization and base-setting month for FY2027. India remains the world’s third-largest automotive market, with the passenger vehicle segment showing consistent year-on-year growth. Electric vehicles, though a small share, are growing steadily, supported by incentives, new models, and greater awareness of ownership costs.
CarBike 360 Says
April 2026’s dip in passenger vehicle registrations aligns with the industry’s typical seasonal slowdown following strong fiscal year-end sales. While short-term demand appears muted, underlying factors such as new launches, improving supply chains, and upcoming festive demand are expected to support recovery. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether this slowdown is temporary or indicative of shifting consumer sentiment.
