Kia Launches Battery-as-a-Service for Carens Clavis EV in India
Kia has introduced a Battery-as-a-Service model for the Carens Clavis EV in India, offering battery rental at Rs 3.3 per kilometre. The scheme aims to reduce upfront costs and is available with both 42kWh and 51.4kWh battery options.

Kia has launched a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model for the Carens Clavis EV in India. This new ownership option aims to lower the initial cost of the electric vehicle by separating the battery cost from the vehicle chassis. Customers can now pay for the battery based on usage, rather than including it in the vehicle’s upfront price.
Key Highlights
- Kia introduces Battery-as-a-Service for Carens Clavis EV in India
- Battery rental fee set at Rs 3.3 per kilometre for both battery options
- 42kWh variant offers 404 km range and 51.4kWh variant offers 490 km range
- Ex-showroom prices remain unchanged with two battery configurations available
Key Details of the BaaS Model
The BaaS scheme allows buyers to finance the Carens Clavis EV body through a standard loan. The battery is provided on a rental basis, with a usage fee set at Rs 3.3 per kilometre. This fee applies to both available battery pack options. The battery rental agreement can last up to 96 months, while the chassis loan tenure is capped at 60 months.
The ex-showroom prices of the Carens Clavis EV remain unchanged under this scheme. The model continues to be offered with two battery configurations. The 42kWh variant claims a range of 404 km, while the 51.4kWh battery pack is rated for up to 490 km on a single charge.
Pricing and Model Updates
The 42kWh versions are priced between Rs. 17.99 lakhs and Rs. 20.49 lakhs. The 51.4kWh variants start at Rs. 21.99 lakhs and go up to Rs. 24.99 lakhs, with all prices ex-showroom in India. The introduction of the battery rental programme does not affect these prices.
Other than the BaaS model, the Carens Clavis EV remains unchanged. Earlier in 2026, Kia updated the model with cosmetic changes. These included redesigned bumpers, new alloy wheels, and an expanded variant lineup.
Industry Context and Future Outlook
The BaaS approach is becoming more common among automakers in India. It addresses concerns about high upfront costs and battery longevity for electric vehicles. By separating battery ownership from the vehicle, manufacturers offer more flexible payment options. However, the total long-term cost will depend on how much the vehicle is used.
