KTM Developing New Twin-Cylinder Platform to Replace 690 Single-Cylinder Engine
KTM is developing a new twin-cylinder platform to replace its 690 single-cylinder engine, aiming to bridge the gap between the 390 and 790 ranges. The new engine is expected to launch globally next year but not in India.

KTM is developing a new twin-cylinder platform to replace its 690 single-cylinder engine. A prototype of this upcoming middleweight KTM Duke, equipped with a twin-cylinder engine, was recently spotted testing in Europe. Contrary to earlier reports, sources indicate that this test mule does not use the sub-500cc parallel-twin motor. Instead, it features a larger, middleweight engine platform.
Key Highlights
- KTM developing a new twin-cylinder platform to replace the 690 single-cylinder engine
- Prototype features larger proportions and WP-branded brakes and suspension
- New engine expected to produce 60 to 70 bhp and meet future emission norms
- Platform will bridge the gap between KTM’s 390 and 790 ranges
- Global launch expected next year but not planned for India
Prototype Details and Specifications
The test mule appears as an early-stage prototype, with minimal bodywork and unfinished chassis components. Its proportions are larger than current sub-500cc models, and the engine casing also appears bigger. The prototype uses a single disc brake setup at the front, with WP-branded brakes and suspension components, which are developed in-house.
This new platform is being developed by KTM Austria. Development began before Bajaj Auto acquired a stake in KTM AG. In contrast, the sub-500cc twin-cylinder engine is a separate project, developed by Bajaj-KTM in India, which started more recently.
Platform Positioning and Market Strategy
According to sources, this new platform will bridge the gap between KTM’s 390 lineup and the 790 range. It is expected to replace the existing single-cylinder KTM 690 range worldwide. The shift to a twin-cylinder configuration addresses increasingly strict global emission standards, which are challenging for large-capacity single-cylinder engines to meet.
The new twin-cylinder engine will comply with future emission norms and offer improved refinement and the distinct character of a parallel-twin. Expected power output is in the range of 60 to 70 bhp, or possibly higher. The final model name, whether 690 or 790, will be confirmed closer to launch.
KTM appears to target the middleweight 650–750cc segment with this platform. The new engine will support multiple models, including the Duke, RC, and Adventure series. These models will compete with other middleweight bikes such as the Kawasaki Ninja 650.
Launch Timeline and Regional Availability
Bikes based on this new platform are likely to launch globally next year. However, these models are not expected to launch in India. Instead, the Indian market will receive the sub-500cc motorcycles currently being developed by Bajaj Auto and KTM.
