SUV sales increased by 11% year-on-year to 58,021 units, compared to 52,431 units in May 2025. Total utility vehicle sales, including exports, reached 59,573 units. Passenger vehicle sales matched utility vehicle volumes, as there were no sales from the cars and vans segment during the month.
Domestic commercial vehicle sales totaled 24,079 units, reflecting a 19% increase over the previous year. Within this segment, light commercial vehicles below 2 tonnes recorded 3,490 units, a 35% rise. The 2–3.5 tonne category grew 16% to 20,589 units.

Year-to-Date and Segment Performance
For the year-to-date period through May, Mahindra & Mahindra's passenger vehicle sales stood at 114,352 units, up 9% from 104,761 units in the same period last year. The farm equipment business also reported higher volumes, supported by domestic tractor demand and infrastructure-led equipment utilization.
CEO of the Automotive Division, Nalinikanth Gollagunta, stated that the company achieved SUV sales of 58,021 units in May, marking an 11% increase. He noted that total vehicle sales reached 99,636 units, a 20% year-on-year growth. Gollagunta highlighted continued demand across Mahindra's portfolio but acknowledged supply chain challenges due to manpower shortages at select suppliers.
Industry Context and Market Trends
The Indian automotive market saw notable developments in May 2026. Tata Motors, a leading electric passenger vehicle manufacturer, surpassed 10,000 units in monthly sales for the first time. Mahindra & Mahindra also achieved record-high sales, driven by strong demand in both passenger and commercial vehicle segments.
Growth in domestic tractor demand and increased equipment utilization contributed to higher volumes in Mahindra's farm equipment business. However, input costs and supply chain issues continued to affect the broader industry.
