- The Mahindra XEV 9S, India's first mass-market three-row 7-seater electric SUV, has become a bestseller.
- Demand remains high, with waiting periods for some variants reaching up to 9 months.
- While the XEV 9S has received positive reviews, some users raised concerns about its adaptive suspension system, especially in the Pack Three trim.
- The adaptive suspension, available only in the Pack Three variant, was tuned for comfort.
Adaptive Suspension Concerns
The adaptive suspension, available only in the Mahindra XEV 9S Pack Three variant, was tuned for comfort. However, test drives revealed that this setup caused continuous vertical movement on uneven roads. This effect became more pronounced at higher speeds, leading to discomfort for some occupants.
In contrast, the Race mode, which features firmer suspension settings, controls vertical body movement more effectively. However, Race mode also changes throttle response, steering, and regenerative braking to prioritize performance. This results in higher energy consumption, making it less suitable for everyday use.
Introduction of Custom Drive Mode

To address the soft suspension issue, Mahindra has introduced a new 'Custom' drive mode for the XEV 9S. This mode allows users to adjust settings for the suspension, powertrain, steering response, and climate system individually. Drivers can now select a firmer suspension similar to Race mode while keeping other settings, like steering, more relaxed.
The 'Custom' drive mode is available only on Pack Three variants, which are equipped with adaptive dampers. Pack One and Pack Two variants continue to use passive dampers and do not receive the new mode. The 'Custom' drive mode joins the existing Default, Everyday, Range, and Race modes, expanding the SUV's flexibility.
All newly manufactured XEV 9S Pack Three units will include the 'Custom' drive mode as a standard feature. This change aims to resolve complaints about the soft suspension without forcing users to rely on Race mode for daily driving.

Future Updates for Existing Owners
It is not yet clear how Mahindra will address the issue for current XEV 9S Pack Three owners. The company may offer the 'Custom' drive mode through an over-the-air (OTA) software update or at authorized dealerships. Until then, only new buyers of the Pack Three variant will benefit from the improved suspension customization.
The Mahindra XEV 9S continues to lead the segment as a popular choice for families seeking a spacious electric SUV. The introduction of the 'Custom' drive mode reflects Mahindra's response to customer feedback and its commitment to improving the driving experience.
Conclusion
With the new Custom Mode, the Mahindra XEV 9S strengthens its position as a versatile electric SUV built for Indian driving conditions. Offering optimized control and adaptability, this update enhances everyday usability while adding a premium edge to the driving experience. Mahindra’s continuous innovation keeps the XEV 9S at the forefront of India’s evolving EV segment.
