Mahindra XUV 7XO Hybrid and Flex Fuel Testing

The camouflaged Mahindra XUV 7XO test mule was seen near Tindivanam. The vehicle's rear design, including diamond-inspired tail lamps and a layered boot lid, matches the current model. The side profile also remains unchanged. Despite the heavy camouflage, no distinctive hybrid or flex-fuel badging is visible. However, future hybrid or flex-fuel versions may feature unique badges, a refreshed front design, and exclusive color options. Major design changes are not expected.
Mahindra is reportedly developing regular series-hybrid options for its internal combustion engine SUVs. The company is also working on range-extender hybrid versions of its battery electric vehicles. The XUV 7XO could be the first Mahindra SUV to receive a strong hybrid powertrain, with the Scorpio N likely to follow.
Technical Details and Market Context

The strong hybrid setup for the XUV 7XO will likely use Mahindra's existing 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. In its current form, this engine produces 203 HP and 380 Nm of torque. It is paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. The same engine is expected to power the flex-fuel version of the XUV 7XO.
Mahindra previously showcased its flex-fuel technology with the XUV 3XO at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show. The XUV 3XO flex-fuel variant used a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine, modified to support ethanol blends from E20 to E85.
Hybrid Vehicle Sales in India
Hybrid cars are gaining traction in India, with Toyota and Maruti leading the segment. In FY2026, hybrid car sales surpassed 123,000 units. The bestselling hybrid car accounted for 49.7% of total hybrid sales. The Toyota Hyryder followed with a 28.4% share, while the Maruti Grand Vitara contributed 9.3%. Other models, such as the Invicto, Victoris, and Honda City e:HEV, had smaller market shares in FY2026.
The Indian government's push for cleaner mobility and evolving consumer preferences are driving automakers like Mahindra to invest in hybrid and flex-fuel technologies. The XUV 7XO's development reflects these industry trends and regulatory shifts.
